Ram Teases Inscrutable Truck

It’s the week to write about truck teasers, it seems. Perhaps tired of Toyota getting all the digital ink about shadowy references to future product, Ram dropped a post on Instagram suggesting they also have something up their sleeve.

Now, Stellantis is jumping into the game. Sort of.

Stellantis F&I Offices Using Captive Finance More Often, Says Report

The byzantine House of Stellantis rolled out its own captive finance arm just over a year ago, seeking to pocket some of those sweet loan profits which were flowing out the door whilst the company attempted to rebuild itself following a sojourn through bankruptcy and an embarrassing parade of suitors.

Now, it seems approximately two-thirds of Stellantis dealers in this country are using the captive lender – after, of course, the sales staff pencils a healthy leg in the four-square prior to stuffing them in The Box.

2022 Ram 1500 Rebel Review - Li’l Red Imperial Express

Step back in time with me to the Seventies, and imagine being in a boardroom in Highland Park, Michigan. The marketers and advertising copywriters of Chrysler were, at the time, reacting to the personal luxury vehicle trend with the Cordoba. Ricardo Montalbán had worked everyone up into a rich Corinthian lather, all but assuring buyers that good times and sexytime were simply a signature away at the local Chrysler dealer.

In another room, the Dodge truck folks were trying to compete with crosstown rivals. Adding accessories and other fripperies to the D-series pickup created what was known as the “Adult Toys” lineup - including the black/gold Warlock model, as well as the smokestack-equipped Li’l Red Express. These factory customs acknowledged that people were buying trucks not just for work - and anticipated in part the explosion of the truck market that was to come.

But Khan himself could have never foreseen something like the 2022 Ram 1500 Rebel - a four-wheel drive, five-passenger truck that rides better than the nicest Chryslers and Imperials while handling truck duties better than any Dodge of the disco era.

  • Daniel China can absolutely make quality products when contracted at the right prices or their car companies trying to compete. However, I doubt any of their nearly 100 EV companies would even want to try to break into the US market with a 25% tariff (Polestar pays this) and the huge service and support network needed other than *maaaaybe* BYD eventually and only then if they end up using their upcoming plant in Mexico for not just Latin America, but decide to try the US market without the tariffs. They def would need to have excellent quality and support to be taken seriously, we'll see!

  • VoGhost Matt, do us all a favor, will you? Since you love the term 'EV mandate' so much, could you please point to a single country or state that has mandated that consumers buy an EV? At any point in time - historical or the future. Just one, Matt. Just a single place where the term 'EV mandate' is even close to being true.
  • VoGhost Just so we all have this correct, you're saying that the red states that refuse to educate their children or fund healthcare for their citizens also want them to die earlier from fossil fuel pollution? OK. I see. Makes the decision in November a little more stark.
  • Golden2husky The image that sustainable products are second-rate is a problem that the industry has to overcome. Best way to do that is to make sure your first effort is a home run right out of the box. Michelin is the type of company that can make it happen.
