Audi has just revealed its new A7 Sportback, a “four-door coupe” in the European fashion that slots between Audi’s A6 and A8 sedans. The A7 will debut in Europe this fall, starting around €50,000, and will likely launch in the US sometime next year with the S4′s 3.0 supercharged V6 making 300hp. Which makes the A7 something of a larger S4 (or smaller A8) for fashion victims, a general strategy Audi largely got right with its A5 Sportback. The big question going into today’s reveal: would Audi’s stylists be able to pen a distinctive enough vehicle to differentiate the A7 from its closely-packed siblings. Based on our first peek, we’d say they pretty much pulled it off, as the A7 looks sharp enough to hang with the Jaguars, Panameras and Quattroportes of the world. But just how many sales will be pulled into Audi by a cab-rearward take on the A8′s perhaps overly-bland looks still remains very much to be seen.

    So we’re getting the A7 Sportback in the US but not the A5 Sportback? Weak. I’d have actually been interested in the latter, especially in S5 guise.

      Me, too, but the A5 Sportback apparently can’t pass US rollover standards due to its lower roofline. Sad (or stupid, depending on your point of view).

    You wonder if it is coupe-like enough for people who desire a four door sedan but somehow feel old and untrendy unless the roof line radically slopes and takes away headroom, visibility, and seat cushion height.

    The side windows might not have the gun slit narrowness that four door coupe aficionados prefer.

      Or the massively thick B-pillars that completely block rear visibility in cars like Mustang, Camaro and Altima Coupe. Apparently those are a “feature.”

    Yet another Audi watered down from concept to reality…and is almost the exact same color as the stagnant liquid in the Death Star’s garbage dump for some reason!

      Watered down? With the exception of the toned down front end (granted, I preferred the more aggressive face on the concept)and a slightly raised greenhouse, I think the rest of the concept carried over almost identically.

      In fact, I’d say that this carried over 95% of the concept, which in the auto industry is pretty darned good, IMHO.

    I’m a bit surprised at the negative tone in some of the comments. I think that the A7 is pretty slick looking, and in many ways the live reveal shows that ‘in the flesh’ it looks better than in the press shots that were leaked over the weekend.

    I have no problem with these “4 door coupes” because I think it gives automakers the ability to offer a broader range of vehicles to appeal to niche audiences in an economical fashion. Traditional A8 buyers may be turned off by the diminished cabin space, visibility and “flash” of the A7.

    Me personally, I’d pick this over an A8 in a heartbeat. The new A8, nice as it is, really does look rather bland, unfortunately.

    It certainly looks better than the A8 but does it have all it’s clever weight saving technology or is it based on the A6?

      It’s based on Audi’s new MLB modular architecture like the A8 (and A4/A5). The next A6 will be on the same architecture as well. And yes, Audi claims extensive use of aluminum.

    As with other Audis, the interior is beautiful, the exterior crippled by the prognathous grill they’re so fond of at Audi.

      Besides the ridiculous (but strangely attractive) BMW X6, which to me qualifies as less of a “coupe” and much more of an SUV, what car is Audi chasing in BMW’s line-up with the A7? The Concept CS shown at the Shanghai Auto Show is still just a concept, and the 5-series GT is not even attempting to compete with this car. So, what are they chasing? If BMW does plan a four door coupe, and I seem to remember hearing that, it’s obviously not available yet, so I’d say that BMW is chasing Audi on this one. And they’re both chasing Mercedes in any case.

      How is the 550GT not the competition for this Audi? They look like pretty much the exact same idea to me, and the pricing seems to be in the same neighborhood as well.

      They are totally different cars/concepts/directions.

      The 5 GT is supposed to be another offer to the crossover-crowd, a model somewhere between the 5 Limousine and the X6, more space, but more SUV-like looking than for example the Wagon (which therefore, US-people won’t be getting).

      The A7 is supposed to be a 4-door coupe, slotting in between A6 and A7 for more design-oriented buyers. Quite exactly like the CLS (though not as close to the A6 as the CLS was to the E-Class in its basics).

      You can actually see this difference in one simple measure: Height.

      The A7 is 4cm, or 1.5″ lower than the A8 or A6. (1420mm to 1460mm to 1459mm). It also is lighter than the A8, and about the same weight of the A6 (as might be expected for the “sporty” Coupe.

      The 5 GT is 10cm or ~4″ higher(!) than the 5 Sedan (or 8cm higher than the 7 sedan). (1599mm to 1464mm to 1480mm). It also weighs about 200kg more than the comparable 5…

      Again, what I think people are forgetting is that thanks to modern platform sharing and manufacturing efficiencies, automakers can now offer niche products like this at a profit. The net result is that they can offer more variety, which will (hopefully) appeal to a different segment and result in increased overall volume.

      It’s more flamboyant than an A6 or A8, so it will appeal to a different buyer than the traditional A6 or A8 buyer. I think it’s a net win, overall, because by offering additional choices the manufacturer doesn’t have to compromise quite so much.

    Amazing how close it is to the concept, especially on the inside. They changed the Bentley style seats to more conventional ones, and changed to conventional wood trim, but that’s about it. In the looks department, this blows the hideous Panamera out of the water (what doesn’t).

    This particular color scheme doesn’t work for me, but in black with a tan or gray interior, oh yeah.

    Slick enough to run with the Jags, Panameras, and Quattroportes? This thing is DROOPY. Panameras are ugly, and I like this A7 better than them, but this car doesn’t even compare to a Jag or Maserati. Sorry.

      This makes the XJ look like the big ugly blob that it is, with that hideous and MASSIVE rear end hanging over the wheels. You’ll notice Audi didn’t have to resort to blacked out C-pillars to try and disguise the sheer amount of excess bulk back there.

      The Quattroporte is a pretty car, but it’s not really a 4-door coupe, and it’s nowhere near as practical as the A7. Try fitting 50cu.ft of cargo in your Quattroporte.

    A7 looks sweet to me, and really points out just how dumpy the Panamanabananamera and 5GT are by comparison.

    The A7 won’t be priced anything like as high as those 2, either. In the US, it will likely run 10-15% more than an A6, so less than $60K base.
