I highly recommend a Mini Cooper. They are fun to drive, very reliable, get great gas mileage, and everyone likes the way they look.
Just as an aside I have one that I’d be willing to part with just as soon as I get the engine back in after its annual rebuild.
I typically recommend that no matter what make or model you purchase used, just assure that is HAS a prior salvage/rebuilt title. Best "Bang for your buck"!

I'd say most cars built before 2000, if in good shape, and not known money pits, would be a good bet. Just be prepared to do a lot of routine maintenance - everything is rebuildable at moderate prices, and give up the the living room entertainment center, which doesn't belong in a vehicle anyway.
