Customize This: Ram Says 'Yes' to Entire Mopar Catalog

Most truck owners customize their rigs to some degree – witness the multimillion dollar aftermarket industry and the popularity of SEMA. Not to mention the existence of Truck Nutz.

Ram, after refurbishing the 1500 pickup in an effort to quash its competition like beetles under its tires, wants in on some of that high profit action. Today, at the Chicago Auto Show, the company unveiled a passel of Mopar gear for its snazzy new truck.

The Flame Red 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn Sport 4×4 showcased at this year’s Chicago Auto Show is equipped with a 2-inch Mopar lift kit delivering additional off-road clearance and an aggro appearance. Lift kits help accommodate oversized 35-inch tires with knobby tread and, as luck would have it, Mopar now offers an 18-inch beadlock-capable wheels. How fortuitous.

Beadlocks help keep tires pegged to the rims when aired down in preparation for gnarly off-road action. Matching trim rings, well, they’re an essential bit of theatre for the world’s extroverts.

“At the Chicago Auto Show, Mopar is showcasing the art of the possible when it comes to accessorizing the all-new Ram 1500,” said Pietro Gorlier, Head of Parts and Service (Mopar), FCA. “With more than 200 parts and accessories, available at launch, Mopar delivers the largest array of factory-backed, authentic products to personalize the new Ram 1500 and make it truly one of a kind.”

The fabulously named RamRack is an adjustable unit that mounts to the factory bed rails, allowing the lifestyle crowd to carry their canoes and kayaks with ease. It’d be good for ladders and other construction equipment too, we suppose. This author is enjoying Ram’s new proclivity for having fun with the Ram name; RamRack is great and, if one looks closely in the console of the new 2019, they’ll find a USB port stamped with the word RamCharger. Excellent.

Ram’s catalog isn’t all visual frippery. A new Ram Airflow cold-air intake system is said to increase the breathing capabilities of its 5.7-liter HEMI V8, although no power increase is mentioned. A cat-back exhaust terminating with shiny 5-inch tips is said to crank up the Ram’s exhaust note to hairy-chested levels. The stock tone is already manly.

Mopar turned this trick with the new Wrangler as well, showing off a similar number of items at last year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas. Like those Jeep bits, these Ram parts are covered under the truck’s original factory warranty.

From a business perspective, it makes a load of sense to offer this type of equipment right from the factory. Dealers can add the price of the gear to a note, further making bank for the company once interest is considered. It drives up average transaction prices too, a vaunted metric by Wall Street standards, given that these add-ons will be reflected on the truck’s Monroney label.

Isn't this the Euro menu system like BMW, Audi, and Benz use? American makers use trim levels and option groups, but the Euros make darn near everything a la carte. The joke is, you buy a Beemer at base price and the dealer asks, "Do you want wheels and tires with that?" The bottom line is, adding individual custom options beyond trim levels and optional group equipment packages is a source of additional profit for both the maker and dealer. For the buyer, entering a dealer's showroom will become even more dangerous.

  • Redapple2 Love the wheels
  • Redapple2 Good luck to them. They used to make great cars. 510. 240Z, Sentra SE-R. Maxima. Frontier.
  • Joe65688619 Under Ghosn they went through the same short-term bottom-line thinking that GM did in the 80s/90s, and they have not recovered say, to their heyday in the 50s and 60s in terms of market share and innovation. Poor design decisions (a CVT in their front-wheel drive "4-Door Sports Car", model overlap in a poorly performing segment (they never needed the Altima AND the Maxima...what they needed was one vehicle with different drivetrain, including hybrid, to compete with the Accord/Camry, and decontenting their vehicles: My 2012 QX56 (I know, not a Nissan, but the same holds for the Armada) had power rear windows in the cargo area that could vent, a glass hatch on the back door that could be opened separate from the whole liftgate (in such a tall vehicle, kinda essential if you have it in a garage and want to load the trunk without having to open the garage door to make room for the lift gate), a nice driver's side folding armrest, and a few other quality-of-life details absent from my 2018 QX80. In a competitive market this attention to detai is can be the differentiator that sell cars. Now they are caught in the middle of the market, competing more with Hyundai and Kia and selling discounted vehicles near the same price points, but losing money on them. They invested also invested a lot in niche platforms. The Leaf was one of the first full EVs, but never really evolved. They misjudged the market - luxury EVs are selling, small budget models not so much. Variable compression engines offering little in terms of real-world power or tech, let a lot of complexity that is leading to higher failure rates. Aside from the Z and GT-R (low volume models), not much forced induction (whether your a fan or not, look at what Honda did with the CR-V and Acura RDX - same chassis, slap a turbo on it, make it nicer inside, and now you can sell it as a semi-premium brand with higher markup). That said, I do believe they retain the technical and engineering capability to do far better. About time management realized they need to make smarter investments and understand their markets better.

  • Kwik_Shift_Pro4X Saw this posted on social media; “Just bought a 2023 Tundra with the 14" screen. Let my son borrow it for the afternoon, he connected his phone to listen to his iTunes. The next day my insurance company raised my rates and added my son to my policy. The email said that a private company showed that my son drove the vehicle. He already had his own vehicle that he was insuring. My insurance company demanded he give all his insurance info and some private info for proof. He declined for privacy reasons and my insurance cancelled my policy. These new vehicles with their tech are on condition that we give up our privacy to enter their world. It's not worth it people.”
