The Kia EV9 Starts at Around $55,000 and Goes On Sale in Late 2023

Kia has a hit on its hands with the EV6, the first in a line of unique, futuristic electric models. The larger EV9 is coming soon, with reservations opening next week, and Kia recently announced pricing for the upcoming electric family hauler.

The EV9 is available in five main configurations, ranging from the entry-level Light RWD trim at $54,900 to the top GT-Line e-AWD at $73,900. Buyers can reserve an EV9 with a refundable $750 deposit starting on October 16, and people who make an early reservation get a Kia swag bag with a portable EV charger and complimentary maintenance.

The base EV9 Light gets a single electric motor making 215 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The EV9 Wind gets two motors and up to 379 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Kia equips an 800-volt electrical architecture to enable fast charging, and the SUV promises up to 300 miles of range in the Light Long Range RWD model.

The EV9 will go on sale later in 2023, and Kia will start manufacturing the SUV domestically in 2024 at its plant in Georgia. While it hasn’t been eligible for federal EV tax credits yet, moving production to the United States will give Kia the final North American assembly it needs to qualify its vehicles.

The Telluride is the most successful modern SUV by a long margin, still goes for 20k above MSRP so this should do to Tesla what Telluride did to the Highlander/RX: total destruction.

There are 27 Tellurides on dealer lots in my area for MSRP. Am I missing out on a joke?

I wonder how the reservation system actually works because when the Santa Cruz launched (I know Hyundai isn't Kia) many learned their "reservation" was actually nothing more then just asking nicely for the factory to ship something to their local dealer. It wasn't build to order, you got no choice in trim or color. The whole thing was kind of silly and misleading. They also offered a concierge service and a VIP test drive - both were nothing more then someone giving your information over to a local dealer - from there the normal shenanigans kicked in. I found the whole process to be insulting.

I remember going to a Hyundai dealer in the fall of 2021, when my mother-in-law was car shopping (she bought a 2017 Elantra Limited - my oldest daughter is now driving it, since the M-i-L's dementia won't allow her to drive). The dealer had one Santa Cruz on the lot (a black one), and it was spoken for.

Why would ANYBODY (even one seriously considering a BEV) care? There is only ONE BEV game in town.

Great to see production moving to the US. More jobs for Americans thanks to the IRA.

Great point, Carson, GM's inability to keep up with the industry is really killing them. Already, 20% of vehicles sold globally are EVs, and increasing by 40-50% annually.

I'm just glad to see that we are building a lot of them in the US, providing great manufacturing jobs for Americans.
