Stanford University bring us a little closer to the day when cars will come with a pre-programmed Nurburgring (or, in this case, Pikes Peak) lap time. [Hat Tip: Robstar]

They can keep the robotics. I want to take Miller’s 4WD up Pike’s.

A rather corny film, I thought. But it is nice to see people trying some new things with cars. A different group at Stanford funded by Nissan has done well with a by-wire steering project.

This same Volkswagen-Stanford group had a less-professional video posted here showing the car being driven (driverless) on campus. That showed its capability less dramatically. And truth be told, its capability is modest. If they are going to be going up Pikes Peak, metaphorically tomorrow, then tomorrow is years away.

Still, great to see somebody working on advanced cars. GM’s abandonment of its AUTOnomy/Hy-wire concepts still makes me weep. Great stuff, that.

VW/Audi gets Stanford EEs and GM gets an Obamaloon law school dropout. Wonder which company will be here 10 years from now.

Unless it’s Ari Vatanen, or Michelle Mouton I’m not interested.

Then of course if you haven’t seen Climb Dance, you’re not a real motorsport lover.

How can VW/Audi have gone so far away from their motorsport efforts to be involved in this?
