Kia Sportage Updates Styling for Fifth Generation

Kia has updated the design of its Sportage to mimic the enticing angular menace that is the K5 sedan. It’s a far cry from the overtly friendly styling of the outgoing model, though appears to be working rather well. The fifth generation of the crossover digitally debuted in Korea on Tuesday and has already garnered a notable amount of praise. Though this went exclusively toward the visual updates, as there doesn’t appear to be much changing in terms of mechanical equipment.

Kia’s official release doesn’t even mention powertrains.

2019 Kia Sportage Receives Mild-hybrid Diesel, Even Milder Visual Refresh

While it seems a little early for Kia’s Sportage to gain a visual refresh, the manufacturer apparently didn’t feel its new engine option should arrive unaccompanied. The automaker is launching a 48-volt diesel mild hybrid system in Europe for 2019, and chucked in a handful of aesthetic enhancements for good measure.

The jury’s still out on the motor’s availability in North America. While the diesel decline in Europe is palpable, they still sell a lot more passenger cars equipped with them than we do. However, since it does fall into that weird hybrid category, there’s a chance it could crop up in extremely limited numbers. We’d bank on seeing a mild hybrid system from Kia make its way to the U.S. and Canada soon, only coupled to a gasoline motor. But expect to see some upgraded bodywork and interior touches for the coming model year.

Hyundai and Kia to Recall 1.3 Million Vehicles Over Repeat Engine Debris Offense

Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. have announced plans to recall 1.3 million vehicles in the United States and South Korea for engine defects that could result in stalling. While no automaker wants to face the possibility of a recall, Hyundai Motor Group is already facing a sales slump in both North America and Asia.

Having to waste millions on a recall that further brings the company’s ability to regulate quality into question is the last thing it needs. Last month, Hyundai recalled roughly one million cars seat for a faulty fastener that occasionally caused seat belts to detach in a crash.

2017 Kia Sportage SX Turbo Review - Jumping Off the Blandwagon

The SUV’s rise to king of the automotive fiefdom is well documented. Seizing the chance for fat profits and sales glory, manufacturers took their existing product, added a couple of doors and ladled on the chrome. Buyers flocked to them like Brexiters lining up to change their vote. In time, thanks to Prius driving tofu-twinks wearing nuclear-free peace sandals, these brutes became as politically correct as a Monsanto home fracking kit and, with a few exceptions, have been resigned to the dustbin of history.

OEMs recognized the trend, slowly backing away from the behemoth machines. Modifying their smaller unibody offerings, tall two-box crossovers soon dotted the landscape, watering down the SUV formula until buyers were left with the automotive equivalent of Metamucil.

Review: 2014 Toyota RAV4 (With Video)

When the RAV4 landed, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. In a world of unified corporate identity the RAv4 goes off script with a look all to its own. While the old RAV sold on mini-truck looks, the new one is undisguised crossover. The new nose has grown on me slightly since I recorded the video above, but I still find the look a little awkward. Since I was scolded for wearing striped pants with a striped shirt the week I tested the RAV4, feel free take my style opinion with a grain of salt as you click through the jump.

  • Arthur Dailey Reading the brochure I cannot remember driving or riding in a Mark IV or V that did not have dual power front seats and dual lit vanity mirrors. I do miss body side molding, rub strips and cut pile carpeting. The HVAC system on these and many other higher end domestics of the 1970s and early 1980s was superb. You could open up the windows and the sunroof in extreme cold temperatures, turn up the heat and drive around comfortably without a coat. The A/C was probably powerful enough to cool down one of the current 'micro condos' being sold in Toronto as livable space. Regardless of the size of the opera windows, if you were claustrophobic you would not enjoy the back seat. It was cramped and you had minimal visibility in any direction from the back seat. The trunk if you had a fullsize spare had minimal storage space but was deeply carpeted. As much as I appreciate this series and Corey's writing, I still vehemently disagree with the looks of the Mark IV versus the Mark V. As much as I appreciate the Mark V, i still believe that the more horizontal/angular looks of the Mark IV are superior.
  • MaintenanceCosts I don't believe a single Mark V was made with what I would see as the correct configuration: steel roof, AstroRoof, and the 460. The steel roof was first-year-only and appeared to be specified only on very basic cars.
  • Jwee FUBAR. Oxford, home of Cowley assembly plant for Minis. The City spent 50+ years promoting the car as transport, and now punish the people for following their policy.
  • RHD The Skoda Enyaq is priced at 34,600 Euros in Germany. If Skoda would like to dip their toes in the water at the other side of the pond, now would be the time.
