Nissan’s next Z could be a crossover because the world needs another crossover, Autocar is reporting.
The next-generation Z may appear in Frankfurt as a concept to gauge the new direction for the model, according to the report. The car could be a two- or four-door crossover, powered by a gasoline or hybrid powerplant — or it could be a sub-orbital military base with the power to destroy planets. (We just don’t know!)
A crossover Z could be a logical step for the company to appeal to more buyers, or it could cannibalize sales from the Juke. At least we know the next-generation Z won’t be the IDx.
According to Autocar, the crossover Z could be based on the future shared global CMF B platform and theoretically home a 1.6-liter turbocharged mill.
We may have to wait until the Frankfurt Auto Show next month to see what Nissan’s up to, but any concept would likely be a far first step in some kind of product planning.
Car rumors are fun.
April Fools….THanks I needed a laugh.
Normally I would laugh this off too… but remember Nissan is the same company that actually made the Murano Crosscabriolet.
Saw one on my drive home today, with the top down! I was irrationally excited to see one in the wild.
Surprisingly it was being driven by a late middle aged woman.
In some states the Morono Crosscab came with a residential real estate license. Wouldn’t be shocked to see Nissan make an abomination like a 350Z CUV.
Nissan got hold of some Choco again… the last time they had a taste was when we got the Murano Crosscabrio.
This is Panda, from Mexico. Very good stuff.
This is Bava, different, but equally good.
And that is Choco from the Hartz Mountains of Germany. This one’s a little more expensive. But when you shoot it, you’ll know where that extra money went. Nothing wrong with the first two. It’s real, real, real, good shit. But this one’s a fuckin’ madman.
/pulpfiction.
I imagine Trump would MC a Puerto Rican Day Parade before this happens.
You do understand that Puerto Rico is part of the US, and that Puerto Ricans are US citizens, right?
You overestimate Trump, underestimate Puerto Ricans, or both.
Maybe his 25% tariff could keep this thing at bay.
I’m not sure what the point of that would be.
They have made this for years as an Infiniti. It used to be known as the “FX”, now it’s “Q-something”, right? I’ve toyed with the idea of buying one. :O
In a matter of speaking. Every RWD-based Infiniti that isn’t a truck (QX80, previously QX56) is on Infiniti’s FM or Front-Midship platform, which within Nissan is only used on the Z.
And just about every one those uses Nissan’s version of the VQ3X engine. Just like every VW/Audi is basically a Golf thanks to the MQB system.
Sort of. MQB is the newest (Mk.7) Golf architecture, and though it is modular, most of Volkswagen’s cars were based around the Golf long before the inception of MQB. The original Jetta was quite literally a Golf with a rear deck tacked onto it, and the original Scirocco was a stylish “coupe” Golf, as is the current one. The Mk.5/Mk.6 architecture does underpin most Volkswagens, and those will surely over to the Mk.7/MQB structure once they’re redesigned.
As for Audi, most of its cars (starting with the A4, on up) are longitude-engined. Only the transverse-engined Audi models share their architectures with the Golf. That’d be the A3 and TT (Mk.7) and Q3 (Mk.6). The A1, not sold here, is a derivative of the smaller Volkswagen Polo.
JMII,
Dr. Williams has just taken you to school.
Class dismissed.
Technically if you’re talking small crossover, you mean the EX. A Z crossover would probably be similar to an EX.
Let’s hope they solved that “small thermal exhaust port” problem.
Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battle station!
Fear will keep the local boyracers in line. Fear of this automobile.
> Fear will keep the local boyracers in line. Fear of this automobile.
What I fear the most are the multitasking soccer moms who may potentially pilot the crossover version of this vehicle. Or any crossover. Or any SUV. Or any minivan. Or any station wagon. Or any vehicle on the road.
The 350Z was such a looker back in 2004. The 370Z, while a little fussier in the styling details, still carried a taut and compact design. This Nismo kit makes my eyes hurt. It looks like orthodontic braces.
Good grief, if they make their “sporty” CUV, I hope they don’t call it a Z. I don’t understand the need to bring back/ continue storied names as totally different vehicles. I mean, I know it’s all about marketing and the average consumer doesn’t care/know about heritage anymore but still… Bastardization…

This has just been a horrible day.
I wouldn’t be surprised, the current 370z already shares platforms with a few CUVs.
I find this to be silly, but don’t particularly care.
They already make the FX. This thing should be the EX Coupe. Like the EX, but even LESS practical. The roof will be concave and the doors will open inward.
The Z is a good idea. Light weight, good engine, decent chassis. Apparently it needs to be better tuned/executed though. Most reviews say it is not at great car at 8/10ths.
I think it needs to be less expensive, too.
Remember when the 300ZX turbo was a Corvette competitor? No, we certainly can’t have that again…
In thinking about it, they’re saying crossover now but what will ACTUALLY happen is:
AWD-AWC, as I’ve been saying for a while. The new Z will be jacked up and AWD, maybe RWD on lower end models or something.
