We've already documented the sad plight of truckers struggling to cope with rising diesel prices. Now Newsweek reports that profit-squeezed truckers have cut back on their, uh, entertainment expenses. "According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, diesel on the West Coast now costs $4.87 per gallon. That means truckers could easily spend $1,000 to fill up their tanks, leaving them with little extra cash and less likely to take a detour. For bordello owners, relocating to more central locations is impossible. Under Nevada law, brothels can only operate in counties with fewer than 400,000 residents." For example, The Moonlite Bunny Ranch (a third less Bunny than our regular Ranch?) is a 72-mile round trip from Reno, and none of it via the Interstate. Not to mince words: it's a long haul for a booty call. The Nevada Brothel Owners' Association reports that revenues are down by 45 percent. John McCain's gas tax holiday can't come soon enough. So to speak.

High diesel prices have got the truckers hard up, huh?

If the bordello could buy gas in bulk, maybe the hookers could revive business by offering a two-fer. A pump in the skank, pump in the tank kind of thing.

Well it’s the oldest profession and many higher ups use their services - yet denounce them. As liberal as it sounds I’m not sure why prostitution is so heavily illegal in this country. Regulate brothels and allow limited openings in zoned areas (industrial). People are going to pay for it regardless of whether it’s illegal or not. The prudes will bitch and moan yet behind closed doors they wind up doing the same things they so vocally denounce.

You can’t make this stuff up.

Oh the humanity!

Good One, Chuck.

Truckers should consider getting a Canadian route. From what I’ve heard, the oldest profession is more common, convenient, and tolerated (legally) in the great white north.

Increase in diesel should be offset by lower petroleum jelly prices.
June 18th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
jaje, I completely disagree!!!
The brothels shouldn’t be burdened with such practices. Why not have the truck stops hire prostitutes? It would eliminate the wasted gas, encourage “entertainment @ the pump,” and be less of a fire hazard for the brothels.
Oh, I forgot. We live in a country where prostitution is, for the most part, illegal (while those writing said laws turn up in related scandals on a regular basis).

Couple this with yesterdays “Dangerous Distractions” news item, and I have to ask, just how much time do you spend searching for the appropriate picture to match the news item?

3 days of T “T&A” C. Excellent.

Not everything is okay just because a few scum bags do it. I doubt you’d like your mom, wife, sister or daughter selling themselves, so why would it be okay with someone else’s? Show some decency.

If the prostitutes drove to the customers instead of the other way around, then the gas cost could be tax deductible as a business expense. Check with your accountant etc etc etc.

More T&A! WOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!

Don’t generalize. From your writing, it’s apparent that it would offend YOU if your relatives sold themselves. If my relatives knowingly and willingly decided that this was a career path for them, I would support this decision as I would any career decision. Assuming, of course, that it was legal. I’m sure others would, as well.
Besides, who are you to determine who is a scum bag? Just because their beliefs or morals differ don’t make them bad people.
Also, when was prostitution limited to females?
Seems like you might have a narrow view of the real world, as well as history (America didn’t pioneer prostitution, and just because the Moral Majority don’t agree NOW doesn’t mean anything for the past. Plenty of sane, moral civilizations supported prostitution).

Only TTAC would have such a hilarious feature. No wonder I have this site bookmarked!

Not just brothels are getting hit hard. Any out-of-the-way destination is hurting right now.
I don’t know if it was here, NPR, or somewhere else where I read/heard about Branson, MO’s new fuel discount campaign to get visitors to pony up the fuel to visit. Other destination resorts, like the on my mom works at in Arizona, are feeling it. People just don’t wanna drive somewhere and then not have enough money to enjoy it when they get there.
Re: Brothels… in Australia, prostitution has been decriminalized meaning that is it not legal, but also not illegal. They do have legal brothels everywhere (they call them “knock shops” there). There are rules they have to follow. What exactly, the rules are, I don’t know. But they are subtle places. I unknowingly walked past on the way to work for years until my girlfriend pointed it out to me. I had thought it was a law firm or something. She used to use their parking lot when clubbing as a teenager.
I’ve walked into a couple by accident. One time out bar-hopping with a coworker, drunk as skunks, looked like a bar from the outside. Inside was nice, but not a bar, and not one we could afford. My GF was pissed off about that until she checked with a coworker and confirmed there is a brothel in that area that does look very much like a bar.
Another time in Perth I tweaked my back and we drove past a business named “West Perth Massage”. Just the therapy I needed! So we went in, a naked girl ran into the back. It took a minute to sink in that they were not going to be able to fix my back. My GF thought it was hilarious. I wonder that the clerk though about this couple coming in, with the guy bent over in pain.
I had a flatmate in Perth who worked at a brothel in the outback running the front desk. She always had heaps of entertaining stories when she came home from work.
Oz… what an awesome place…

There are a lot of professions I wouldn’t want my friends or relatives in, but that doesn’t mean I think they should be illegal. I’d hate to have a relative working for WalMart, a meat packing firm, etc. But I would like to see prostitution regulated so that the sex workers don’t get exploited by pimps (who take virtually all the money prostitutes earn and who treat them terribly), so that their health is protected, etc.

Yeah, I’ve used that “by accident” thing too…

I could see how the Moonlight Bunny Ranch would be hurting, it is a good 15 miles round trip out of route from US- 395. At the current cost of $1.40-1.90 per mile to operate a semi that is painful.
It would be interesting to compare with the receipts of the Wild Horse “Ranch” in McCarran (just east of Mustang) which is just 1 mile of I80.
The competition is brutal and the margins are low in long-haul. The poor schmuck in a Swift or Werner truck is only making $30-45k per year, not a lot of disposable income.

We should have gov’t subsidies for these types of emergencies!
