One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other

In 50 years we’ve gone from this…

At the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show, Daimler used the occasion for their smart brand to introduce what they say will be “an extremely limited special edition” street legal production version of the smart fortwo by fashion designer Jeremy Scott known as the smart forjeremy, first shown as a concept at the Los Angeles show late last year. Also at this year’s Shanghai show, Buick introduced their latest Riviera concept, a product of GM’s Chinese design studio. 2013 is the 50th anniversary of the first Riviera, introduced on October 4, 1962 as a 1963 model.

… to this

I generally don’t care what I drive as long as it gets me there. However, if I had to pick between the smart forjeremy (isn’t that name just so twee? But then so’s the car) and my Litespeed, unless it was a life or death situation, I’m riding my bike. Besides, the John Varvatos Chrysler 300C is much more my style. Hell, a Bill Blass Lincoln Mark V is more my style than a smart forjeremy even if it is the automotive equivalent of a blue blazer with white shoes.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

The wife and I were out for a Sunday cruise in the Cordoba yesterday. Driving through town we came up behind a '72 Riviera and I had forgot how beautiful cars used to be. It was a nice view of the rear until he stopped at Autozone:(

Isn't EVERY smart fortwo extremely limited?

  • Statikboy I see only old Preludes in red. And a concept in white.Pretty sure this is going to end up being simply a Civic coupe. Maybe a slightly shorter wheelbase or wider track than the sedan, but mechanically identical to the Civic in Touring and/or Si trims.
  • SCE to AUX With these items under the pros:

It's quick, though it seems to take the powertrain a second to get sorted when you go from cruising to tromping on it.[/*]
The powertrain transitions are mostly smooth, though occasionally harsh.[/*]
I'd much rather go electric or pure ICE I hate herky-jerky hybrid drivetrains. The list of cons is pretty damning for a new vehicle. Who is buying these things?
  • Jrhurren Nissan is in a sad state of affairs. Even the Z mentioned, nice though it is, will get passed over 3 times by better vehicles in the category. And that’s pretty much the story of Nissan right now. Zero of their vehicles are competitive in the segment. The only people I know who drive them are company cars that were “take it or leave it”.
  • Jrhurren I rented a RAV for a 12 day vacation with lots of driving. I walked away from the experience pretty unimpressed. Count me in with Team Honda. Never had a bad one yet
  • ToolGuy I don't deserve a vehicle like this.
