ban-r100

Some of you were around earlier today when TTAC went dark. Our main man Marshall was bringing the site up to code after a disastrous pre-VerticalScope encounter with Estonian programmers alienated us from WordPress compatibility (go figure). Well, we came back from the other side of the moon relatively intact. But there’s a bannage bug that’s sent out an error message to the multitudes saying you’re banned. Well, you’re not. Well, some of you are, and those of you who are know who you are. The rest of your aren’t and I apologize for impugning your good name. We’re sorting this out STAT. Meanwhile, the plugin is deactivated. If you WP pros see any suspicious code lurking about—when and how the bug manifested itself—I’d be most appreciative if you dropped Jeff a line. The good news: the upgrade clears the way for our redesign, one that you will enjoy. RF

First I was banned, but then I could log in…life is good!

FYI, my ‘ban’ message showed only when clicking certain articles. But there were workarounds, like clicking the comment button.

I seem to have been reinstated.

After posting a comment in the “Positive Post Of The Day: More Diesels For America Edition” item I edited a couple of typos and left the site. When I returned a short time later I discovered I had been banned.

And here I though you hated me…

It seemed fairly random. Started when I wasn’t logged in. I opened several articles at once, which I do fairly frequently, and all but one came up saying I was banned. This happened a few times – sometimes I would be, sometimes I wouldn’t be. I did manage to log in and post and I don’t think I had any problems while logged in.

As long as it’s not a Car and Driver-like redesign. No yellow highlighter, please. :)

I’ve seen the mockups: it retains enough TTAC DNA to be familiar and some new features that will be fresh and new; for TTAC, anyways (comment rating, post thumbnails, better galleries, and lots more!).

Someone mentioned your slagging of the 1 Series on 1addicts.com and a bunch of the addicts headed this way to set you straight. Nearly all of them — several of whom had never even visited the site before — found themselves “banned”. They were wondering how you had pre-banned them.

Many a time I’ve stared bannification straight in the eye without a shake, this time I will say I was a having the slight worry. So good.

Seems to have stabilized. I’m no longer getting the banned page. And it is a great page: “YOU ARE BANNED”

You’re still getting messed up function calls appended to your pages though:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function show_manual_subscription_form() in /usr/sites/thetruthaboutcars.com/www/htdocs/wp-content/themes/ttac4.1.5/comments.php on line 164

EDIT: and now it’s gone. Way to work that WordPress guys!

Vertical Scope is the antichrist. They have ruined every website that I once loved.

One remaining problem, for some of us at least. I see every picture twice, the second slightly larger than the first.

Why is every picture now showing up twice?

Thank (insert your deity here). I thought it was some awful culling of users. In the ensuing panic, I conceived all sorts of scenarios in which it was due to some car failing on my part!

Thankful not to be banned. I like it here…

Hit the first article last evening and was told that I’m banned. Second article in line, no problem. Third article, banned. Fourth, no problem.

At which point I logged in – no problem from that point on.

I wear Ban when I can find the solid in the store. Great stuff, the roll-on sucks thou.

Glad I wasn’t banned but I haven’t been here commenting much over the last few months anyway.

What kind of new stuff is coming?

  • avatar

What is Vertical Slope? I guess a lot has happened while I have been gone since I have no clue on Earth what that is.

VS is an agglomeration of websites owned by Rob Laidlaw. They bought TTAC from NameMedia in May.

As for the new site, the web guys have created mock-ups that look great. As Jeff said, same old TTAC with Web 1.0 features and functionality. Unfortunately, not everything I’ve seen will make the final cut, so I can’t show them to you for fear of dashing expectations.

Suffice it to say, the new (old for everyone else) underlying WP software had to be upgraded before VS’ boffins could change the design.

These teething troubles are regrettable, but a painful part of a beautiful thing.

It happened to me once yesterday…couldn’t access any articles or anything. So I surfed elsewhere for a few hours and the problems were gone when I returned.

    (edit)
However, after this comment was loaded, I was returned to a place where I only have access to this article; the entire right side of the screen is blank.

Why is every picture now showing up twice?”

This only happens to me when I have ‘scotch with my pancakes’ (paulie quote).

But serioursly, I was only banned from the “Know Your Material” article. Whether I was logged in or not, whether I clicked the title or the comments, and whether I clicked the title which was showing up under the “Latest Reviews”, “Editorials” and “Latest Articles”. I thought I was being banned because the group was discussing how to beat Maximum Bob at Leguna and they figured as a GM employee, I would pass on mission-critical info.

I am happy to hear that it was only a software glitch – my narcissism lead me to believe wrongly that I was important enough to be “archaic : cursed” . http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ban
