More spy shots of the upcoming Ford Maverick small pickup truck have surfaced over on MaverickChat.com.

These shots show the Maverick (in FX4 trim) parked alongside a current Ranger, and show that the Maverick is narrower, lower, and smaller.

They also show a good look at the rear suspension. The front-wheel drive Maverick appears to have a coil-spring, twist-beam rear suspension that bears similarity to what’s on offer in Ford’s Transit Connect van.

AB notes that the location of the springs would nix the idea of all-wheel drive, but also remarks that since the Maverick, like the Bronco Sport, will be based on the Escape, it shouldn’t be hard for Ford to whip up a solution.

The idea of a front-wheel drive truck may sound strange, but the well-received Honda Ridgeline is, of course, front-wheel drive, unless you opt for all-wheel drive. So it’s not unheard of. The Ridgeline even proves that a front-wheel drive, or AWD truck based on front-drive, can handle the same tough tasks asked of trucks with aplomb.

        The photos clearly show four doors, especially the ninth photo, so consider your dreams crushed. Crew cabs sell better than standard cabs – people are buying four door passenger trucks instead of four door passenger cars.

        The automakers will kill off the SUVs/CUVs by giving them the same swoop they put on four door sedans, destroying the rear seat headroom, and lowering the rear seats until grandma can’t sit back there, or get in and out easily.

        It’s a lot harder to put swoop on a pickup, so expect the compact truck market to help kill off compact/midsize utility vehicles, where the swoop is getting more pronounced. By the time automakers realize people want more visibility, it’ll be too late.

    I just wish Ranger was this height to begin with. Sadly I can’t wait for the AWD version of this thing to become reality. Plus I doubt it would meet my towing requirements given its starting point and assumed powertrain. So I’m stuck with a Ranger despite it being lifted too much for my taste from factory. Rumor has it BellTech is working on a drop kit.

    Last year, I got my rental at FLINT Airport. They gave a new Ranger. It was next to a Tahoe.

    It was good bit longer than The Tahoe.

      2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Length – 204 inches
      1998 Ranger extended Cab – 201 Inches
      2020 Ranger Length 210.8 Inches

      Trucks are longer than their SUV counterparts typically. The older, much smaller Ranger was stimm, in the only congiguration that sort of seated 4 within 3 inches of a new Tahoe. The new truck is larger. Nothing shocking here.

        Call that one on the house due to the typos. But yeah, couple of those type jobs and I’d have a healthy down payment for a cleanish carfax used Toyota. Maybe even grab me an old truck outright!

          I still kick myself for not getting the Hyundai Santa Fe – I hear the 2.4L engine has amazing long-term reliability (because it’s not a turbo?).

            Well you save up and you can probably get you a nice used one someday. Get a little collision repair combined with Hyundai depreciation and that bad boy will be right in your wheelhouse.

    Good pictures; nice-sized truck.

    I like the idea of a FWD truck. Even my old FWD minivan can tow 3500 lbs. Scoffers who say the Maverick won’t be a “real truck” can always get a Ranger or F-Series if you need to tow 10,000 lbs.

      People with Honda Ridgelines love them and do all sorts of “truck things”. The mentality that “Trucks” should be rear wheel drive, solid rear axle, traditionally mounted engine and transmission, etc., is just archaic thinking. The Ridgeline handles wonderfully, is comfortable, easy to park, and does most of what 95% of the half ton market does with their trucks on a daily basis in a reasonably sized and amazingly useful package.

    This looks to be the MasterCard™ of trucks.

    Were I to need a truck, this would easily fit the bill (I’d probably get the AWD version when available). I primarily only ever need something with a wide open bed to haul bulky, awkward things. I don’t own anything that would require towing capacity and would be able to rent on the few occasions it might come up. If it looks anything like the renderings have done, it shouldn’t be hard to stomach either. If a potential buyer is 100% honest in the capability they need, and this fills it, I see no reason this shouldn’t sell well enough

      While I won’t disagree with you, the design would be too polarizing and we already know what people in the U.S. are going to say about a pickup based on that. Anywhere else it would be praised and purchased for what it is; here in the states it’s “not a real truck.”

    According to the May 7, 2020 article in Ford Authority the Maverick will only be a crew cab with a 1.5 turbo I-3 and an optional 2.0 turbo I-4 with an 8 speed automatic only. It will be a unibody a variant of the Ford C2 platform shared most with the Ford Bronco Sport. It will likely be produced alongside the Bronco Sport at the Ford Hermosillo plant in Mexico.

    Still looks bigger than I was hoping for but that might just be the camouflage making it look bigger. I definitely don’t want a full-time second row, though. Extended cab is still my thing.

          @JMII : Exactly. Enough room to toss smaller packages and things you want to keep out of the weather into, with proper drop-down seats for one or two SMALL passengers on occasion.

          I have no need for a full second row and I only carry more than one passenger maybe 2 or 3 times per year. Problem is, the OEMs act like you carry passengers all the time and never carry anything else back there, choosing to occupy the otherwise clean floor with a plastic plinth that takes up far too much volume for its worth.

    Ford Ranger XL Supercab equipped with FX2 or STX package may be obtained for $25K. How much less will the Maverick cost? I expect Maverick will be a tough sell on value.

    The base Maverick will be just below 20k which is likely to be FWD crew cab with a turbo 1.5 I-3 with air, power steering, power brakes, power windows, vinyl seats, and plastic floor covering. I would like an extended cab but according to the May 7 article on Ford Authority the Maverick will be available only in crew cab with an automatic. I doubt there will be very many basic models available at the Maverick’s introduction. Either AWD or 4 wheel drive will be an option.

    I want off-road and/or deep snow capabilities and prefer a 6 foot box when I buy my next truck. That automatically removes this truck from the list. I’d put up with a 5 ft. box in something like the ZR2 Colorado or if Ford were to offer a Ranger Raptor. The Gladiator is just too expensive.
