Chery doesn’t have much new stuff in its booth this year.
There is a QQme covered in rosepetals and the usual assortment of not-quite-ready-for-market electric prototypes every Chinese company fields. But Chery trumps every other car manufacturer at the Shanghai show in one respect: Women.
When I walked by their booth, I was impressed. 30 at least, up against the wall. China’s finest establishments do not have this variety of beauties.
When they trooped off stage (exit left AND right) …
they were going …
and going …
and going …
and going …
… until the last stragglerette was gone.
I wish they had that many new cars! (That blue car on stage? I have no idea what it was.)

Bertel, love your perspective on the auto show!
Now, how about some Wulings?
Wulings? There were none in the Shanghai GM / SAIC etc booth. If they were outside – forgetaboutit, my feet still hurt.
I’m picturing the conversation at Chery headquarters a few weeks (or months) ago.
Executive #1: “We don’t have anything new to show for the Shanghai show. There’s no time to even mock up an empty shell prototype.”
Executive #2 who was daydreaming about his last call-girl the whole time; “I know: GIRLS! We’ll just hire more and prettier girls than anybody else!”
You know Chery is serious about their QQme when they decide to go with 5-bolt pattern on the wheels as opposed to four-bolt.
VW was the same way circa 1970,
Serious about crash protection more like!
The crash beams in the door are so serious that they have actually popped outside of the door skins.
I loved those days! Advertising was simple, yet elegant.
The all new Beetle! Now with 5 holes!
Introduce that promiscuous little Bug to the 1980’s Quantum, word on the street is that Audi-derived platform with the longitudinal motor had 5-pistons stroking within 5-matched-to-a-precision-fit cylinders ! Sounds like a marriage made in heaven (or at least a good tme).
(Hmmm Bug 10 years older than Quantum patrolling fora hook-up? Does that make it a cougar-Bug?)
Wait … the Beetle switched FROM a 5×205 bolt pattern TO a 4×130 one in 1968 when VW ditched the swing-axle suspension (at least on the German-built cars).
Where do you see a fifth lug?
ZOMG, I could like totally rock out that flower car. It needs daisy wheels! It is SOOOOO CUTE!!!
What is the scale for the flower car? It looks like a blown up beetle, a la Mini Countryman, but I can’t tell if it just looks huge, or is huge.
Cars?
There were cars on that stage?
Chery seems to have grasped the concept: “If you ain’t got the hardware, make sure you bring lots of…….software!”
Sex sells. Or at the very least….distracts!
