Mercedes Adds 4Matic CL550, Prices C63 AMG

Since Mercedes is making product announcements on the scale of Coca-Cola changing the cap on its 20 oz. bottles, they get rolled into a double pointed post. First, for the first time in recent years, Benz will be selling a 4Matic coupe: the CL550. Although all Mercedes sedans are all available with all wheel-drive, the two-door range has been left in in the cold without snowshoes (or something like that). From a marketing standpoint , I don't get it. Owners of such an expensive car frequently maintain a separate all weather vehicle. I would've given the extra traction (in theory) to the CLK. That model's more of a daily driver and competes directly with the BMW 3-Series coupes, already available with four wheeled propulsion. Second, Benz has i stickering the new 450-horse C63 AMG sedan at $53,800. That's only $1,775 more than a basic run of the mill base E350. Benz also released pictures of the C63 plutonium-powered wagon, but Benz PR Manager Robert Moran tells me "there are no plans" to bring the wagon Stateside. Never mind. Will 5,380 people loan me ten bucks each, please?

If only there was a 4matic version of the torquey turbocharged CL600.....the ultimate holeshot-mobile!

Headline confusion notice: The headline says "CLK", the body text says "CL". From the context, sounds like it's the CL. Thanks for correcting. Having said that, I first agree that the CLK should have gotten the 4Matic (the headline made sense) instead of the CL. And I attribute this proliferation of 4WD coupes to the advent of the Audi A5. Soon enough, BMW had to offer xDrive on the 3-er coupes (even the 335i). Will Infiniti be following suit with ATTESA on the G37?

@Joshvar: $1,775? Sounds like a bargain :) Check your math good sir! Not sure what the issue was? That's the difference in price between the $53,800 C63 AMG and the $52,025 E350, according to my calculator (which admittedly is solar powered - ew).
