At UAW's Request, Detroit Three Sign on to Rotating Shutdowns

At the urging of the United Auto Workers to do more to protect U.S. Detroit Three autoworkers, Ford, General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler have agreed to new coronavirus-fighting measures.

While the UAW initially pressed for a two-week production shutdown, the result of Tuesday’s talks was a series of rotating partial shutdowns, the union announced late last night. The move comes after extra disinfecting and social distancing measures announced by the Detroit Three late last week. It also comes as two new coronavirus cases appear at product development centers in Michigan.

It Begins: Fiat Chrysler Worker Comes Down With Coronavirus in Midwest

A day after the World Health Organization declared the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic, an employee at Fiat Chrysler’s Kokomo Transmission Plant in Indiana tested positive for the virus.

This marks the first time a Detroit Three autoworker has contracted the illness, though the automaker claims the plant remains up and running. The employee, who remains unidentified ( The Detroit News claims it’s a salaried UAW member), is reportedly receiving medical treatment.

FCA Closes Italian Facilities Over Coronavirus, Ditto for Autotorino Dealer Group

In what is perhaps the shape of things to come here in North America, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has decided to temporarily close several Italian factories in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Closures will be enacted at Pomigliano d’Arco, Melfi, Atessa and Cassino — with each factory stalled for several days between Wednesday and Saturday.

This comes after FCA took steps to limit the number of people passing through the doors of its Italian offices and factories. Late last month, the automaker issued a letter to suppliers and prospective visitors explaining that it would refuse anyone who recently visited Asia or any of the Italian municipalities initially affected by the virus outbreak. It then set up sanitation sites to encourage employee hand washing while staff attempted to sterilize their respective workplaces — a valiant effort that was probably doomed from the start.

Reid Bigland, the towering Fiat Chrysler exec who made waves by suing his employer last year, has announced he’s leaving the company after 22 years of service. His last day will be April 3rd.

Head of U.S. sales, the Ram brand, and president and CEO of FCA Canada, Bigland was once seen as a potential replacement for late CEO Sergio Marchionne, but a spat with his employer tainted the longstanding relationship. That lawsuit apparently came to a head earlier this year.

Giulia GTA: Alfa Romeo's 540 Horsepower Super Sedan

Alfa Romeo has spiced up the already sexy Giulia Quadrifoglio with a limited-run GTA variant. The title is shorthand for “Gran Turismo Alleggerita” and indicates its status as a lightweight, high-performance grand tourer. Dark, Contagious Clouds Gather Over the Auto Industry

With South Korea, Italy and Iran now reporting growing coronavirus outbreaks, it looks like this is going to be one of these long-haul illnesses that sends everyone to the store to stock on up on milk and bread. As you might have guessed, automakers have continued issuing warnings as the virus’ range continues to expand. On Wednesday, Toyota announced that its Japanese plans will undoubtedly be impacted by parts shortages over the next few weeks as Chinese suppliers remain dormant.

The worst of the outbreak is still located in Wuhan, where the virus is spreading out toward China’s coastal cities. Reliable figures for the number of people affected are difficult to come by. The Communist Party of China (CPC) and World Health Organization (WPO) both claim China had this one in the bag, with new cases always reported as “slowing” — an assertion you would be forgiven for doubting. COVID-19 seems anything but under control. This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told U.S. citizens to prepare for the worst as the stock market stumbled over fears of a global pandemic.

Leave the Escalade alone and do a shrunken Escalade-esque lineup (the first time I saw a Hyundai Palisade I thought that was the XT6 that Cadillac shoulda made) and dump the alphabet soup models and trims.

Blackwing.Now I know (because I've asked) dealers are still thinking they are selling Demons with the kinds of markups on Blackwings, but for enthusiast drivers in the know, those cars are legit. They get lost in the shuffle of M-this and AMG-that, but they hold their own. However, with rising CAFE standards and upcoming emissions requirements, along with European CO2 limits, they all can't be turbo V8s with no hybrid propulsion. So at least mild hybrid them to try to eke out another 8-10 mpg average. That's a good start. Do something with the Escalade. These aren't the early 2000s when they had the hip hop image and every corner had a jet black Escalade with chrome rims. In my area, you just don't see them any longer as money has moved to the Germans. If they want to compete with the Germans, they have to downsize it and crank the engine up to 11. It's still way too truckish to compete with the Q8, X7, and GLS. Even though they probably don't want to, keep the sedans. Don't give those up to the Germans, Japanese, and Koreans as well. And with all that, go all in with performance. Become what BMW was over 15 years ago. They tried that before and half assed it, but they have the tools to make it happen now. Try to appeal to the audience that BMW and Mercedes left behind and that Genesis and Acura are trying to claim (or reclaim). Good luck Cadillac...you'll need it.
