The Kia EV9 is just hitting the streets, but we’re already learning about the automaker’s “next big thing.” Motor 1 located an application on China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) website that covers a new EV called the EV5, a small crossover with the brand’s signature funky styling.

Kia recently announced plans to develop new hybrid and plug-in hybrid models to help it cope with wavering EV demand, but that hasn’t stopped the automaker’s trudge toward full electrification. In fact, Kia’s CEO said the company was pushing forward with plans to release an affordable electric car called the EV3.

Every year, different groups of auto journalists and industry professionals come together to choose a “best of” list to recognize vehicles in various categories. One of the groups is the World Car of the Year (WCOTY) jury, which includes journalists and professionals from several countries. They recently revealed their 2024 picks at the New York auto show, and it’s clear that legacy auto brands are facing increasingly tough competition.

Having one of the first entries into a segment can really help an automaker. It’s even better if said entry is done well. Enter the 2024 Kia EV9 – a three-row large SUV with an electric powertrain that is one of the first vehicles of its type on the market.

Kia has a hit on its hands with the EV6, the first in a line of unique, futuristic electric models. The larger EV9 is coming soon, with reservations opening next week, and Kia recently announced pricing for the upcoming electric family hauler.

The Kia EV6 just landed last year, and the three-row EV9 is on its way for 2024, but there’s already another electrified Kia to discuss. The automaker recently hosted an event in China, during which it showed the EV5 concept. The ultra-futuristic-looking two-row SUV could be sold here, as its tidy Sportage-like dimensions would make an appropriate foil for the larger EV9.

The Kia EV6 is one of the most well-reviewed EVs on sale, but the automaker is busy developing follow-up hits to its flagship model. The EV9 isn’t due until next year, but Car and Driver got ahold of a spec sheet with details we’d likely have waited months to discover otherwise.
