VW Ends Racing Operations, Sends Team to Build EVs

Do you ever get the feeling that everything even remotely fun and interesting is being thrown on the pyre of progress so we can collectively live safer, duller lives? Case in point, Volkswagen is dismantling its racing operations so the 169 people it employed can be reincorporated. Responsible for the all-electric Volkswagen ID.R racer that showcased some of the performance advantages of EVs to attentive audiences around the globe, the team will now be responsible for building ID models intended for mass consumption.

While we’re sure spreading their engineering prowess around will benefit VW’s core brand, it’s unfortunate that it came at the expense of the brand’s motorsport activities — modest as they might have been in 2020.

Volkswagen Officially Announces Record Attempt for Nrburgring-Nordschleife

Volkswagen is currently on a quest to prove electrification is the true path forward for automobiles. However, it’s not doing this by releasing production plug-ins with robust battery ranges. Instead, it’s taking its electric racer to the Nordschleife this summer after achieving total victory at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb last June.

The automaker wants to showcase the might of electric vehicles before it begins releasing them en mass from 2020 onwards. It’s even calling its ID R racer “the sporty ambassador” for an upcoming range of planned EVs.

“After the record on Pikes Peak, the fastest time for electric cars on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife is the next big challenge for the ID R,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets. “A lap record on the Nordschleife is a great accolade for any car, whether a race car or a production car.”

  • ChristianWimmer Honestly, the W220 S-Classes aren’t as bad as people make them out to be. The early models had some issues which were thankfully mostly taken care off with the facelift, though strangely rust remained an issue. The important part is that these days the faults are known and there’s a thriving online community [for any car] that gives useful DIY tips on preventative maintenance and where to get genuine OEM or solid [reliable] aftermarket spares. When I worked for a Benz dealer in the early 2000s I got to drive plenty of these (mostly S320, S320 CDI and S500 models and once an S400 CDI V8 Turbodiesel) and I found them relaxing, comfortable and great Autobahn cruisers. Best of all the W220s actually handled compared to the floaty and boat-like W140 predecessors.
  • MaintenanceCosts I love EVs but long road trips are the worst scenario for them. If my road trip doesn't have any off-highway driving, the ideal vehicle for it is a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Pinnacle. If it does, then the best choice is a 2021 or earlier Toyota Land Cruiser.
