Junkyard Find: 2009 Pontiac G3 Wave

The years 2008 and 2009 were interesting times for GM, with the company filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on June 1, 2009 and the Pontiac Division clearly on the ropes (despite the Bondo applied over Pontiac’s rusty image by the Solstice).

To The General’s warlords, only one solution to Pontiac’s woes made sense: take the Chevy Aveo, itself a South Korea-built Daewoo Kalos, and give it Pontiac badges!

Mexican Chevrolet Aveo: Zero Star Safety Rating

The Chevrolet Aveo is the most popular car in Mexico, but is also the least safe, according to consumer safety experts. Testing from Latin NCAP found that the Aveo, when sold without airbags, received zero stars for its front-passenger safety rating.

Huffington Post and The Wall Street Journal report that American safety advocates including Consumer Reports have written to General Motors CEO Mary Barra, asking why the potentially life-saving devices that are installed as standard equipment for many other countries, are expensive add-ons for Latin American countries.

(“Life-saving” assuming that Takata isn’t the supplier.)

Rental Car Review: My Wisconsin Week With a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic LT

In my travels as Chief Justice of the 24 Hours of LeMons Supreme Court, I spend a lot of time in bottom-end rental cars. Sometimes I get press cars and write about them on these trips, but that’s usually more of a hassle than it’s worth. For about 15 four-day race weekends a year (plus a few vacation trips here and there) I’m in a Dodge Avenger, Nissan Altima, Ford Focus, or other rental-fleet favorite. 2013 is a year of Wisconsin visits for me; first, I went to my wife’s Milwaukee high-school reunion with a ’13 Jaguar XJL Portfolio, then I spent nine days in Door County with a rental ’12 Sonic, and next month I’ll be at the Chubba Cheddar Enduro at Road America with a ’14 Mitubishi Evo. The Sonic made an unexpectedly strong impression on me in August, so let’s see what life with Chevy’s little Daewoo is like.

  • Wjtinfwb Most Nova's were dogs, but, look carefully and you might find one of the 9C1 Police package Nova's built in the late '70s. A base 4dr sedan or 2dr couple, the 9C1 included the L48 350 4 barrel and suspension parts including some thick sway bars from the similar Z28 Camaro, Goodyear pursuit rated tires on Rally wheels and the usual HD cooling, electrical, etc. to tolerate the abuse heaped on police cars. Not really fast, but pretty solid handling and a much more nimble size than a Caprice or LTD in the day. The forerunner to todays P71 Crown Vic, many ended up as race cars and LeMons beaters. A bright spot in an otherwise sad ending to the storied Nova's of the 60s.
