Used Car of the Day: 2000 Chevrolet Astro

Today it's van time with this rear-wheel drive 2000 Chevrolet Astro.

This is a unique one. There are almost 300K miles on it -- 293,643, to be exact -- and a lot of work has been done. That includes a new engine, new rear end, rebuilt transmission, new brakes, new radiator, new water pump, new catalytic converter, and a lot more.

It runs, but it also throws codes. There is a vibration at certain speeds and the back doors don't open. Oh, and the A/C doesn't work.

Yet, the asking price is $10,000 because the seller has sunk, by his or her estimate, $13K in to the van. And because he/she can't figure out the going rate for Astros.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

From the looks of the interior and the parking area, I'd say that $10,000 is about $11,000 too high.

Gotta knock off a zero, and I'd consider it... and transfer all the good interior from my 2002 that recently blew up. (Tip- don't buy waterpumps from autozone! less than 65 miles before it self-destructed and dumped all coolant in 2 seconds)

Unfortunately, money spent on maintenance doesn't increase the value.

  • Normie I don't travel for either work or pleasure. Since retiring I don't have to do that for work and where is the pleasure in spending lots of money only to find other places full of humans?
  • Big Al from Oz Gidday mites it yar man Big Alan from Oz here wildin out with me boys in the outback if yar brave enough for them terrible airports then you should come over where we are and be ready for the greatest adventure of a lifetime I reckon
  • Redapple2 Read my magazine and book. Eat drink and relax in the Admirals Club. It really takes the sting out of travelling. I aint no jive turkey.
  • Redapple2 If you have a sane car (one that averages 24 mpg) a $1 /gal increase costs you $41/month more. The average person spends $380/ month eating out.Can I learn anything from these facts? Hum. Give me a sec............
  • Redapple2 I realized the average person is stupid. 1---- i MUST have a vehicle 2 x as big as i really need (a massive pig up truck, or Tahoe pig) 2----- I am entitled to cheap gas. ENTITLED. It is the end of the friggin world as It has been alluded to above. But you see, gas comes from the earth in far away places. Sometimes events interupt the marketplace. I believe this war will last a short time and the markets will revert to lower levels. It s time this unstated - sotovoce war Iran has had with seemingly everybody, is ended. Before they have nukes. This is clear even to a child. (they already have near ICBM with the strike on Diego Garcia) Outside of CAL, gas this week averaged ~~ $3.85. (CA has insane taxes and gas is refined mostly - out the country (Japan, or trans shipped thru carribean ports)). >>>>>>>>The national average (after inflation adj.) for gas was HIGHER THAN THIS FROM 2005 THROUGH 2015. (except fot 2 years that were a tad lower than the bar i set above). Grow up please
