QOTD: What EV Startup Would You Invest In?

Here's a brain buster for you: Let's say you woke up tomorrow flush with cash. More than you could possibly ever spend. So you decided to invest of some of it. Knowing EVs are poised to become a larger part of the automotive market, you bet on a startup.

Which one do you choose?

For simplicity's sake, we're going to leave Tesla and the legacy automakers out of this one. We'll focus on Rivian, Lucid, Faraday, Canoe, and others.

Rivian, for example, has an intriguing product in the R1T truck -- but it's facing job losses and Amazon took a bath on an investment in the company.

Lucid stock is weaker, as of this writing, than Rivian, but its Air sedan is poised to take on Tesla.

Meanwhile, Faraday Future is struggling, but comebacks do happen.

What say you? If you could invest in an EV startup, which one would it be?

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

    Does Magna count?

Rivian, Canoo and Alpha, splitting my investment dollars 50%, 30% and 20% respectively. Rivian will do for pickups and SUV what Testla did for cars. I think Canoo I think will do well with the influx of cash from Walmart. As for Alpha, I love their designs and some of their features. I know as a company they are probably vaporware, but I love their designs

Rivian definitely. Tesla still. Aptera potentially one day.

Had my first real-world Rivian sighting the other day. R1T. It was in motion, so I assume not out of charge. No body panels were falling off (but it wasn't raining). My electricity still worked when I got home.

Haven't seen an Amazon Rivian EDV in the real world yet, but am looking forward to it.
