Because a perfect circle is one with teeth sending power to the rear wheels. 3.14:1!!!
I’m not talking about the Sierra Cosworth. That Sierra had a much more stout 3.64 LSD rear gear. Nope, I’m talking about the most plebeian of Sierras, where forbidden fruit meets rotten tomatoes.
But, hey, at least it could still hustle around a track to exciting cocaine-fueled, big hair, commercial techno.
Oh, ’80s … please stay terrible forever.

Here I was all ready to make fun of the commercial’s emphasis on performance, and then I find out that the thing hit 60 in 7.8 seconds. For the mid ’80s that was getting a move on. I guess the snarling was justified.
Next time, old commercial! Next time!
Saab 9000 was half a second quicker to 60, also!
And that was before Trufecta Tuning
7.3 seconds to 60?
Damn, the Saab 9000 was really quick! I mean, that might not sound that quick, but I’m pretty sure a 2.4 Accord is slower than that…
Sorry, MotorWeeks test indicated 7.6.

I’m pretty sure I saw 7.2 cited elsewhere.
But was that a N/A or turbo model?
I can buy the later turbos (early 90s onward) putting in low 7 second to 60 times.

This site says 7.5 seconds to 60 for the 200hp CSE Turbo. I’m not sure I buy that, if MotorWeek got 7.6 from an earlier less powerful car.
The 0-60 times of Saab turbos back in the day did not tell the whole story. They were traction limited off the line severely. Just not enough tire (or suspension) to get the power to the ground. It was the absolutely shattering mid-range power once you were rolling that really impressed. 30-70 and such.
I remember Clarkson being very impressed with the early 00s 9-5 for midrange passing 50-70. Course the rest of the car kinda fell flat.
*I always liked the 9-5. Except for the later ones which looked like they had glasses on.*
1. It’s weird when people other than Sajeev talk about Sierra stuff.
2. I fear the ’80s staying terrible forever is not likely. The YSL couture show recently was an entire ’80s inspired collection, like girls out of a Robert Palmer video. Normally I wouldn’t know this, but it was front page one day. Evidence: http://stylecaster.com/saint-laurent-couture-2016/
3. Required update on Sierra TTAC car.
Good grief the fashion world is weird. I’m not clicking on anymore of your links. My wife is horrified at some of the 80s fashion elements showing up in some everyday clothes aimed at teenagers who didn’t endure that decade and therefore do not harbor the gag reflex we do.
LOL
I have to provide evidence of my claims! Or else people will just be like nah nah not real.
I understand better now why our parents called us morons when my generation tried to bring back the 70’s a la plaid pants and bell bottom jeans. I should have kept my acid washed Z Cavaricci’s to sell as “vintage” to today’s moronic youth.
However I’m leaving the planet if Skidz come back.

Tell me about it.
I am uncomfortable!
After 30 years, the Ford Sierra is still one of the most beautiful cars ever.
What, no Merkur comments yet?
We’re still trying to forget about Merkur.
Yes, co-worker had one of the above. Called it his “exerati”.
Yes! That’s very similar to what I called it when I was a little kid, except I used the proper pronunciation of the X: “Zrati”.
It’s one of the worst alphanumeric names.
I actually saw an XR4 last week on my way to work. It was dark blue I think, very loud and needing a new exhaust. I said “Heyyy XR4!”
The empty interior around me was none too impressed.
I’m still trying to figure out how they thought that, already having Mercury as an upmarket version of Ford, they should have Merkur, as… an upmarket version of Ford…
Because it’s pronounced Mare-coor, and Mr. Wally Smith at Birmingham Ford will easily be able to educate the customer on this Germanic difference.
Why didn’t they just call the brand Sierra?
Sierra XR4 and Sierra Scorpio. I like it.
That does sound better, but not foreign enough. They were aiming for BMW customers with these!
Because GM owned the rights to that name in the US. Spelled “Ciera” as in Cutlass Ciera. But sounds the same is good enough.
3.14? 3.64? Those are some seriously loafy gears for a car that size. Did the engine redline at 5000 or something?
If we stick with this being PI day we can celebrate by eating pie. What would we do for differential day?
Make like an early CTS-V and eat a differential!

Mad props. Skillz even.
