The Kia Cerato is already on sale in world markets, but we’ll be getting our first taste of it, in the form of the Forte.

Expect a three-car lineup, similar to the Elantra, with a hatchback and even a coupe model. No word on whether the hatch is based off the Cerato, or the European Cee’d.

    30-mile fetch

Looks a lot like a Dart in profile.

I would hate to be a backseat passenger, squinting hopelessly out the little wedge of window created by the sloping roofline and rising beltline. As a kid, I enjoyed looking out the window on family road trips. Any kid in that car will have to content himself with the tops of telephone poles or the graining of the door panel plastics.

Was gonna say the same thing, cept I thought for a minute there were new wheels availabel fro the Dart.

My kid definitely doesn’t have the view from the back seat of modern cars that I did growing up, definitely a modern design trend.

They all have that pseudo-teardrop shape for aerodynamics reasons. Can’t get forty em pee gees otherwise.

Sure, it’s how you get a ~3000lb chunky monkey compact to hit the magic numbers.

That rising beltline is a styling choice, though. Some new, decidedly unstylish cars like the Camry, Accord, and Passat seem to be keeping the beltline down & giving more glass area in back. Since mom & dad are buying the gas, my 10-year old self getting shuttled through the Sawtooth Mountains would easily trade in the 5 mpg for the view.

View? Any kid too short to see out the windows is either going to be in a booster seat with a head restraint/belt guide that wraps so far around the sides they couldn’t see out anyway or starting at a DVD player strapped to the back of the front seat’s head rest, or both.

That is one of the reasons kids of all ages like to ride in my 04 Ram, as they enjoy an unobstructed panoramic view on both sides, and backwards. The view forward is somewhat limited though, but they seem not to care much.

This looks like the Dodge Dart done right, and I’m sure it will fare much better than said Dart, too.

But you are correct. The going trend these days (especially for Hyundai/Kia) is a sliver of a greenhouse, complimented by a tall beltline and flashy wheels. If you want something you can actually see out of, check out the 2013 Honda Accord.

Or maybe Sajeev Mehta can hook you up with a well-pampered Panther…

My thoughts exactly. Looks like a Dart.

“The new Kia Forte! Made in the same time and with as much enthusiasm as Franzia.”

Thanks to Top Gear, I now read “Cee’d” aloud as “C apostrophe D.”

It looks like Kia’s styling is moving closer to Hyundai and further away from Peter Schreyer’s VW roots.

Me, I prefer the clean styling of the current Forte.

I agree that with this new Forte, it’s moving closer to Hyundai’s style, and that I like the differentiation between Kia and Hyundai so far.

But the current Forte looks too much like a G8 Civic in itself.

It has the same the-paint-rolled jowl as the Mazda CX-5. Do not like.
