QOTD: What's The Best Roadside Coffee?

Tim Healey

I had to schlep myself from Chicago to Ann Arbor today in a Jeep best designed for trails as opposed to the interstate, all so I can drive some stuff tomorrow at a place that the public can't access. The things I do for you people...

But I digress.

I am in Michigan for some test-driving, hence the late QOTD and the lack of UCOTD today (and likely, tomorrow). On my way here, I felt myself getting a little sleepy, and I knew I needed my afternoon jolt of caffeine. I searched in vain for a Starbucks -- I was in the middle of nowhere, where gas stations and McDonald's would be my only options. Mickey D's FTW.

I suppose my predilection for Starbucks marks me as a yuppie, but I like Dunkin', too. Biggby Coffee, a chain I see here in Michigan, is also a good choice. Tim Horton's is solid. Panera, McD's -- if it's halfway decent java I ain't complaining. But I have my preferences.

What about you? Do you search out a certain chain during cross-country sojourns? Or are you just getting whatever's available at the next exit?

Sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

For daily drinking, i buy beans and grind them myself. But I once discovered a great coffee brand while on a road trip.

I was heading west to Portland and used an I-90 time-saving trick called the Belle Forsche cutoff. At the west end where it rejoins 90 in Crow Agency was an absolutely horrible gas station with a long-abandonned KFC attached. I had little hope for decent coffee.

What i found inside was a brand I'd never heard of, Dewey Eggberts. It was so good I've sought it out ever since.

You never know where you'll find great coffee.

A&W coffee has surprised me lately. Not bad at all.
