We discussed the general process of repairing a salvage car a few weeks ago and one commenter asked about airbags. Joe Btfsplk writes:

How do you deal with deployed airbags? Are used parts allowed to be used in salvage vehicles? This seems to get little attention in the article.

Dealing with deployed airbags in modern cars can be a tricky and costly situation. The installation of used parts is allowed but may not always be the safest solution.

Cars with deployed airbags are a common sight at salvage auctions. New airbags are expensive and repair costs pile up quickly. This can quickly write-off a vehicle in the eyes of insurance companies. My experience with buying salvage cars included those that had frontal airbag deployment, but I avoided buying cars with deployed side or seat airbags as they were usually a pain to fix.

There are a multitude of ways to repair deployed airbags, starting from the most expensive option of replacing all the damaged parts with new components, down to the most illegal option of just replacing airbag covers. My method of repairing these cars was centered on a mixture of new and used parts that resulted in a safe and cost effective repair.

I wrote about repairing a 2005 Cadillac STS last year and the costs involved. It arrived from the auction with a blown driver and passenger airbag, resulting in a broken dash. The other items that needed to be replaced included the clockspring behind the steering wheel, the airbag module and the seat belt pretensioners.


These items commonly deploy together due to the way safety systems are programmed. In a front end collision, the front crash sensors react by sending a signal to the airbag module. The module then sends a signal to the airbag to deploy and the pretensioner to tighten the seat belt. During the process of this deployment, the clockspring behind the airbag often gets damaged from the force of the deployment.

Checking some discount GM parts websites shows a cost of about $1,600 for new versions of all of these parts, excluding the dashboard. This is a somewhat reasonable cost, but used parts are still an option and, in the case of my Cadillac, they can reduce repair costs significantly. One junkyard in the area had an STS that matched the one I was repairing almost exactly, and they offered to sell the whole package of parts for the low price of $400. This included the dashboard and all of the airbag components except for the pretensioners. I found the pretensioners on eBay for about $80. Once the parts were installed, I had a friend come and program the airbag module to the car.


Most of the cars I repaired followed a similar procedure and finding good used parts was the goal. Some vehicles required new replacement parts if I could not find trustworthy used units. Used airbags and safety components are not heavily regulated so parts quality can be questionable. Some junkyards remove airbags and components and store them in a clean and dry area once the cars arrive; others are happy to let cars sit out in the rain with broken windows, which can cause moisture to enter the components — and we all know what’s going on with Takata right now. Inspecting used airbags is very important since they might look good on the outside but might be a ticking time bomb on the inside.

Even if a used airbag checks out as a good unit and doesn’t show signs of moisture, it might still be unsafe to use. The airbags involved in the Takata recall are still being sold by some junkyards even though they have been deemed unfit to use. Honda is working on removing these faulty parts from the market by reaching out to junkyards and offering to buy them. One of the largest used parts databases,, has also stepped up in recent months to help curb the resale of these faulty parts by removing the affected parts from its database. These are steps in the right direction, but many of these parts can still be bought directly from junkyards by unsavory figures.

Recalled airbags are becoming a smaller problem due to the efforts of the manufacturers and recycling industry, but counterfeit and modified bags are still not under control. These airbags are non-operational and illegal but still get installed by rebuilders looking to scam their customers and sell them unsafe vehicles. They buy replacement airbag covers from China for $10-15 each and remove the deployed components. Once the new airbag cover is glued into place, it appears as if it’s been replaced by a properly functioning unit. They work around the warning lights by removing bulbs, painting over them, or installing resistors in order to fool the airbag system.

These modified systems are very dangerous so it’s important to check. It’s also one of the reasons I no longer buy rebuilt salvage vehicles. If you must buy a rebuilt vehicle, I recommend checking the seat belt pretensioners as the first step. Once they are deployed, they will cause the buckle to sit lower than normal because of the action that pulls down the seat belt. If they check out, I recommend getting an inspection of the system by a technician with an OEM airbag scan tool.

Rebuilt cars that have suffered an airbag deployment are a gamble and the used or counterfeit parts that can be found in some can be deadly. Careful inspections are of the utmost importance.

    An impulse is fired.
    Chemicals mix in an instant.
    The bag explode in your face.
    If your hands aren’t 10 and 2, your wrists are either thrown into your face or broken.

    If you survive the collision, and aren’t on warranty, your soul-less econobox dealership wants you to pay $1500 per bag.

    You search the junkyard online apps.

    You find replacements.

    Another collision occurs.

    Your airbag breaks your neck.

    You realize they were Takata airbags sold at a discount.

    As the light fades, you become a casualty.

    Why I’ll never buy a salvage repaired vehicle with airbag/belt repairs I didn’t repair myself (and I wouldn’t even do this as its not worth it)
    I don’t trust anyone in this matter. People are cheap. People have vastly different takes on what is except able quality. People don’t have the expertise to verify ebay parts, and used parts. Sellers lie for money. Greed seems to trump all.

    That’s the reason why I would never buy a rebuilt car, but would rebuild myself. There is no way to fully test an airbag other than deploying it. If the module is happy, there are no other tests. I would always replace airbags with a new part. All the cosmetic stuff like the dash, used is fine.

    Another excellent reason to buy a humbler new car rather than a ‘premium’ used car.

    Is there a required check by whatever state DMV to get the car certified as rebuilt? Some proof of receipts for parts or something? I know the procedures to get cars certified rebuilt varies widely per state.

    Also, you replaced a wood dash in your STS with the metal? Did you change the trim at the back by the switches as well?

      In NC, they check receipts to make sure that the parts are not stolen and do a visual check that the parts are installed. They do not check to see that the system is operational. The rules vary widely by state.

      Yes, I bought a dash with the brushed aluminum trim and made the rest of the car match. The trim by the switches was actually stick on over black plastic so it was easy to replace.

    In the case of Takata equipped vehicles, a trip to the Army/Navy story and a visit to the special backroom to purchase surplus Vietnam era Claymore mines.

    Additionally a small pressure cooker filled with bolts can work if the dashboard can accommodate.

    I’m wondering if it would be practical simply to install racing harnesses instead of new airbags in a rebuilt vehicle.

    Sooner or later I’m going to have one of those things g off in m face , I hope it doesn’t blind me by pushing my eyeglasses through my eyes .

    One of the biggest self serve wrecking yard chains, Pick and Pull will not sell any airbags since the Takata recall. So finding used air bags is more difficult than it used to be.

    I noticed that nobody including the author has mentioned that you really need to replace all the components of the cars seatbelt system if it has been in a crash severe enough to deploy the airbags. This means the inner belt and latching mechanism, the outer belt and pretensioner and buckle, as well as all the nuts and bolts and brackets that hold everything in place. The forces in a crash are incredible and these components have all undergone an incredible amount of stress. Every owners manual, service and shop manual I’ve ever come across has stated that it all needs to be replaced with oem new parts. This is why the insurance companies declare these cars total losses, it is too expensive to repair them to a standard of safety that they would then be held accountable for. A guy who buys fixes and sells salvage cars is generally less concerned, or just doesn’t know that failure to replace everything, or using used and therefore untrustworthy parts is unsafe. Used safety parts are generally coming off of cars that have already been in a Serious accident, and have undergone tremendous stress. Used parts might hold up in your testing, but end up failing under the severe stress of another crash. As the writer has stated almost nobody who is reselling a salvaged car actually buys all new components for the cars safety systems, as it is a costly exercise, and eats into the already thin profit margins of fixing one of these cars and selling it. Best to avoid cars that have been in wrecks completely unless you can be sure everything was purchased oem new, and installed properly(torque specs are very important when bolting down a seat belt). Driving a car is most likely the most dangerous thing you will do on a daily basis you can’t use the money you saved if you’re dead because a crucial safety part failed in an accident.

    My cousin (who’s worked in collision repair for 20+ years) has told me that in many cases, airbag deployments will push the damages into the “total loss” category, no doubt due to the availability of qualified new replacement parts for these safety systems.

    You’ve definitely highlighted a “gray area” in the salvage/rebuilt business – even those with good intentions will lose considerable profit by taking care to ensure that the safety systems are as good as new.

    It seems to me that if a vehicle that is in a wreck that deploys the airbags, and those parts are no longer available new (from the manufacturer’s approved supplier), then the vehicle should not be able to be rebuilt and sold as “drive-able” – it should be parted-out.

    Which brings up another thought (whilst I ramble); Frontal airbags these days seem to deploy at lower collision energies than in the past – it seems to me that up to a certain speed, the seat belts should be entirely sufficient (along with crumple zones) to protect the occupants, and that airbag deployment may be entirely superfluous (and expensive).

    Your article definitely is food for thought on this subject.

      You are onto something there – the car that I repaired would most certainly have been repaired and returned to the owner if both front airbags didn’t deploy.

      The damage was a slow-speed rear-end accident into a receiver hitch on a truck. When you see how minor the damage was to the front end (trailer-receiver-shaped hole in bumper cover, and tiny wrinkle on the top of the hood, which is still on the car), there is no question that there was absolutely no need for airbag deployment (assuming belted occupants).

      I think the same thing pretty well every time I see a vehicle with deployed airbags. If I didn’t need them in a head-on at highway speed, are they really necessary in a minor fender-bender?

      I believe the airbags shouldn’t deploy unless the collision is severe enough that the vehicle wouldn’t be repairable anyway.

    Been there, done(suffered) that.

    first hand experience here:

    had a 2007 Proton Gen2 A/T here in Iran. had an accident (hit the jersey! at 40 mph, head on!), both airbags deployed, 2 broken ribs for me, 1 fractured rib for wife, towed the car, car did not have full insurance so had to use cheaper aftermarkets, 4 months later, lots of running and sweating for replacements (hood $200, 1 fender $60, radiator $150, front glass $100, one expensive transmission set of wiring $150, bumper $70, grille $25, 1 fog light $60, 1 headlight $60, battery $60, 2 times towing to the city $280, painting $500, mechanical labor $500, chassis repair $500, 2 Autoliv airbags $1000, 2 OEM seat belts $200 plus some other stuff ~$500), a grand total of 150 million Rials (~$4,500) and 4 month later car in rather good shape. car’s price before accident? $12,500. Afterwards? $10,000.

    Airbags and seatbelts were most important to me to be repaired right because safety. they finally were! car in acceptable shape.
