Used Car of the Day: 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4

Today we're going old-school with a car I lusted after when I was still a wee lad -- this 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4. These cars, and their platform-mate, the Dodge Stealth, looked cool as heck back during the grunge years.

This one appears to be in good condition and there are about 107K miles on the clock -- and yes, it's a manual. It's mostly stock but the turbos are upgraded and the owner uses synthetic oil and K&N filters. The owner did replace the struts and brakes recently.

The paint, however, is 34 years old and showing its age.

Still, the vehicle runs and drives well, according to the owner. You can find it near Rockford, Illinois, for $12,500.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

I loved both the VR4 and the Stealth Turbo, but both times when I test drove them, they felt too heavy, and I ended up buying something else (a Supra Turbo in '91, and an Audi TT a decade later in 2001.) They still look cool, though. I especially liked the spoiler location on the Stealth Turbo (just behind the rear window), and it's high mounted tail lights. The available retractable hardtop on the VR4 was neat as heck too back then, but I imagine that it was hard to keep that operating over the years. The roofline was nicer on the coupe pictured than it was on the retractable roof car, though.

  • Golden2husky My HS friend's family had a Wagoneer. These SUVs, plus the next gen that replaced it, were very much front and center in affluent neighborhoods. They were a tough as an anvil, and about as sophisticated. What this poor truck was put through was a testament to how rugged it was. We needed the "emergency" switch in the glove box on more than one occasion to get moving. Sadly, he flipped it in a parking lot - going fast in reverse and cutting the wheel hard. Tons of tire squealing, then silence. It's over so I thought until we landed on the roof and front of hood. I watched the windshield shatter and we ended up on our side. Stupid things kids will do. The Wagoneer took on a decidedly TR-7 look after the rollover.
  • Michael S6 I learned how to drive a manual on a Ford Pinto that my roommate had in grad school. It was not a very reliable car but not worse than my Cutlass.
