Porsche Chairman Confirms Other Off-Road and Heritage 911 Models Coming
People have been building wild off-road Porsche models in garages and custom shops for years, so it wasn’t surprising to see the automaker get into the action with its own beefy 911 model late last year. The 911 Dakar is absolutely unobtainium, however, as the company is only making 2,500 of them. There is hope for people who missed out, as Porsche’s chairman told Car Magazine that more classic and rugged models are coming.
Porsche chairman Oliver Blume dropped the information while speaking in a recent interview. He said the company’s 911 line is separated into pillars, with standard models, GT cars, and classic-inspired heritage models. He noted that the automaker is considering adding an off-road pillar and expanding the heritage offerings to include inspiration from the 1970s and 80s.
“Why not off-road, too,” he asked. Great question, and it’s one that will be answered by demand for, and reviews of, the 911 Dakar. “Now we will see how the market success of the Dakar pans out. And then maybe there will be more to come. The door is now open,” he said.
We don’t know which new 911 model we’ll see first, but the 911 Dakar’s rarity and configuration will likely make it an instant classic. At $222,000 and super-limited numbers, the car is just about as exclusive as it can get, so let’s hope Porsche’s future off-roaders are at least slightly more accessible.
