Housekeeping: Happy Labo(u)r Day 2023

It's the unofficial end of summer (see rant below) so we're off on Monday.

We will be back at it on Tuesday, and we'll be here if news breaks, but first, allow me to kvetch a bit. I get why Memorial Day and Labor Day make nice bookends to what we consider summer, but in reality, summer starts with the solstice in late June and ends with the equinox in late September. So screw you, cold weather! We have a month left of summer!

Yes, summer is my favorite season. Why do you ask?

Ahem. Mini-rant over. See you Tuesday.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

2016 sedan, make and model unimportant. 1/4" tear in the rubber boot on the driver side sealed-for-life factory tie rod end, allowing some of the grease to escape. Now we hear very early wear in the form of a subtle but obnoxious groan as the steering passes through ~18 degrees port. (Growing less subtle over time.)

Owner likes his car, doesn't like strange noises, isn't used to having a vehicle with this many miles. Is thinking about shopping for a new car. (Make and model not as nice. Must intervene.)

Hold up, friend. Slow down. Those parts the shop quoted you at over $200 after their 'discount,' we can get those for 70 bucks, see? (Same exact Moog part, complete with the Oscar Zerk.) When you pick the car back up from my place, take it directly back to the shop for their lifetime alignment deal. I should get me one of those.

(Another new vehicle sale avoided. Are you listening, local dealers? You need to pay me to be quiet. 🙂)
