A friend of mine who used to race cars knew Paul Newman in that context and had plenty of respect for him. A Hollywood actor with a 50 year marriage--that says a lot.
One of my favorite actors. I did not agree with his politics but that never stopped me from enjoying his performances. His race car driving took balls, he was entitled to spend his money any way he wanted. He set an example by donating all proceeds from his food products to charity. A class act.
great actor, great human being, and still winning race in his 80s.
I just bought a bottle of Balsamic Vinagrette in his honor. Also, my old bottle was empty. I once saw Paul Newman at Elkart Lake, WI. It must have been around 1985. He was standing on the lawn near turn 5, surrounded by an entourage. I thought that was cool. I wasn't expecting to see a Hollywood celebrity at this dirty old racetrack in Wisconsin.
