The GMC Hummer EV Drops Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Next Year

General Motors announced that it would no longer install Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in new EVs a while ago, but the GMC Hummer EV’s early release date meant that it slid in under the radar, retaining those features. That’s changing for 2026, as The Drive recently confirmed that GMC is removing the tech from upcoming Hummer EVs.

A spokesperson confirmed the move, but said the automaker had no plans to remove the tech from existing vehicles via an over-the-air update. GM announced its plans to nix the technology in 2023, just a couple months after the Hummer entered production. At that time, the company said it believed the user experience of switching into and out of various interfaces was clunky, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are two of the most requested features.

Instead, GM has opted to rely on Google Built-In, which brings a wealth of features without the popular smartphone mirroring on board. Users can still stream music and other media via Bluetooth, but it’s not as straightforward an operation as it was with Apple CarPlay.

Interestingly, the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX, which are based on the Chevy Blazer EV and Cadillac Lyriq EV, come with the smartphone features, despite the fact that every other part of the infotainment system and interior come straight from GM. That said, as a Prologue owner, I’m not complaining.

The user interface, a key data collection point, significantly impacts driver experience. Drawing on the success of widely preferred interfaces like Apple's CarPlay, GM should have placed more emphasis on the interface's overall effect on the vehicle's experience. Instead they appear to be grasping at values other than what the buyers seek with their vehicles.

Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. " --- 1984
  • Kjhkjlhkjhkljh kljhjkhjklhkjh ""The 10L1000 transmissions are built by GM and vetted by Allison"" .. ewww for tranny? your not losing anything killing the brandingThe term "10L1000" refers to the Allison 10L1000 10-speed automatic transmission, used in 2020 and newer heavy-duty GM Silverado and Sierra trucks with the Duramax 6.6L diesel engine. It is a heavily modified version of a jointly developed Ford/GM 10-speed platform, engineered by Ford with Allison branding and designed to handle increased torque and offer better fuel economy compared to its predecessor, the 6-speed Allison 1000.
  • Wantahertzdonut Among my parent's friends (all engineer/teacher couples), they were friends with one couple that stood out because they were legitimately cool people. They had a 900 and I'll never forget getting a ride back from dinner on hilly roads in western NY in 1989. Everyone else had some rusty penalty box of a car, but that Saab proved to me then there's more to life than practical cars.
