Gallery: Meet the Scout Motors Traveler and Terra Concepts
There’s plenty of buzz surrounding the new Scout Motors EV concept vehicles revealed just outside of Nashville, Tennessee late last month. I headed there myself to see what all the excitement was about. Would the newly formed auto manufacturer “ get it right” in terms of nostalgic nods and retro restyles? Scout Motors was formed in May 2022, and with Volkswagen’s backing, has become the latest automaker for eager off-roaders and all-electric enthusiasts to nab vehicles from.
(Full disclosure: Scout Motors paid for my flight, hotel, and meals so I could attend the global reveal event in Tennessee in person.)
(Ed. note: Yes, we had a news post as linked above. But Mercedes was on the ground and able to bring us a little more detail and some pics.)
Classic Scouts, made by International Harvester (IH) from 1961–1980, were workhorse utilitarian 4x4s that carried thousands of people across the nation for work and play. From the first Scout model off the line, an FC501, to the last one ever built completing IH’s 500,000+ production run on October 21, 1980, Scout’s name means a lot to many. But to an even greater audience, there’s a new Scout in town for an ever-growing 4x4 market.
Scout Motors is currently building its manufacturing headquarters near Columbia, South Carolina, creating over 4,000 jobs. It’s anticipating vehicle production to start in 2027.
The Traveler SUV and Terra pickup are battery electric vehicles (BEVs) that will deliver instant torque and near-quiet traveling experiences synonymous with EVs. Both models are slated to provide up to 350 miles of range. However, if you’re looking to get more than that, you can choose either model with a built-in, gas-powered generator, which should give customers more than 500 miles of total range.
