Used Car of the Day: 1971 Datsun 240Z Series I

Most days, we look for quirky used cars, or inexpensive ones, or project cars. Yes, we've tossed a few classics up there -- two or three '60s Ford T-Birds, for example, but it hasn't been the normal modus operandi.

Well, today, we're going full classic with a $50,000 Datsun Z from 1971.

Found on one of our forums via the well-known Bring a Trailer Web site, this Z has been owned by the seller since 1975 (meaning this person has owned this car for longer than I've been alive) and is yellow with a black interior. It's powered by the 2.4-liter inline-six, has a four-speed manual transmission, chrome bumpers, 14-inch wheels, a front spoiler, rear window louvers, a wood shift knob, a heater, and an AM radio.

Apparently, this car is an award winner, and it underwent a mechanical overhaul recently.

There are some cosmetic blemishes and rust bubbles, and the seller has repaired rust spots before.

UPDATE: Welp, this car apparently sold for $36,000 yesterday. Well, you can still gaze upon its glory.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

Maybe seller would have gotten a better price if he had removed the blue masking tape from the rockers or door bottoms...

    Hello, my name is Mary George. In fact, I was fooled by a dishonest broker who disappeared with my funds a few months ago. I contacted H a c k Mavens and gave him everything he needed to help in recovering my 4.7 BTC and I am glad he recovered my money. Although I was skeptical at first, I can boldly tell the world to contact H A C K M A V E N S 5 @ G M A I L . C O M or Call/Text/WhatsApp: + 1 (2 0 9) 4 1 7 – 1 9 5 7 for all kinds of h a c k i n g services. He is always straight forward and ready to answer every question put across to him. Best regards!

  • Ravenuer Looking forward to it!
  • Daniel J I love my mazda 6. It's getting harder and harder to drive it around where I live as municipalities fail to repair roads. SUVs are just easier to drive with all of the potholes.
  • 1995 SC On the plus side, I found a sedan I want to buy
  • Teddyc73 As I asked earlier under another article, when did "segment" or "class" become "space"? Does using that term make one feel more sophisticated? If GM's products in other segments...I mean "space" is more profitable then sedans then why shouldn't they discontinue it.
  • Robert Absolutely!!! I hate SUV's , I like the better gas milage and better ride and better handling!! Can't take a SUV 55mph into a highway exit ramp! I can in my Malibu and there's more than enough room for 5 and trunk is plenty big enough for me!
