I’ve admired your columns from afar for years, as a non-commenting TTAC reader. I especially appreciate your tenacious appreciation, possession and maintenance of cars you love. My automotive life is not nearly as exciting or robust.

While I love my cars, with two small children, a wife and a full-time job, I only have time and money for two at a time (his and hers). I aim to keep them for at least 10 years each. So, I obsess over the scratches and dents knowing I’ll be stuck with them for that long. Ridiculously, I even worry about scratches from washing them.

Which brings me to my question: What’s the best automatic car wash to use to minimize paint damage?

Piston Slap: New CV Boots? A Split Decision!

I have an 09 Outback with ~65k miles. I had noticed a bit of a burning smell after running it for a while and it was pretty strong after a recent trip. I thought it smelled like a belt slipping but when I popped the hood the two belts looked fine. After looking around for a minute I realized that the passenger side CV boot had torn and was dripping grease on to the cat. Checking the other side revealed that the driver’s side boot was also torn. Apparently this is a pretty common failure for scoobies. The Internet says I should be concerned if I hear a “popping” sound or the clunk associated with failing bearings. Luckily I am hearing neither. The dealer had a set price of $370 per boot for replacing the boots that the service manager somewhat disconcertingly blurted out almost before I finished describing the problem. The independent shop thought they could do both for less than $500 if the axles weren’t bad, but if they were bad then it would be another $450 per.

My question is this: Can I just get split boots from JC Whitney and pack them with grease or do I really need to have the pros fix it?

  • EBFlex Demand is so high for EVs they are having to lay people off. Layoffs are the ultimate sign of an rapidly expanding market.
  • Thomas I thought about buying an EV, but the more I learned about them, the less I wanted one. Maybe I'll reconsider in 5 or 10 years if technology improves. I don't think EVs are good enough yet for my use case. Pricing and infrastructure needs to improve too.
  • Thomas My quattro Audi came with summer tires from the factory. I'd never put anything but summer tires on it because of the incredible performance. All seasons are a compromise tire and I'm not a compromise kind of guy.
  • EBFlex What Ford needs to do is get the quality fixed. These are low quality junk just like the rest of the lineup.
  • AZFelix UCHOTD (Used Corporate Headquarters of the Day):Loaded 1977 model with all the options including tinted glass windows, People [s]Mugger[/s] Mover stop, and a rotating restaurant. A/C blows cold and it has an aftermarket Muzak stereo system. Current company ran okay when it was parked here. Minor dents and scrapes but no known major structural or accident damage. Used for street track racing in the 80s and 90s. Needs some cosmetic work and atrium plants need weeding & watering – I have the tools and fertilizer but haven’t gotten around to doing the work myself. Rare one of a kind design. No trades or low ball offers – I know what I got.
