There’s room for debate over whether the Cayenne saved Porsche, but it’s hard to deny the SUV’s impact on the performance automaker’s bottom line. The Cayenne has been available in dozens of configurations over the years, but the GTS has long been offered a solid balance of speed and luxury. Though it was absent for the 2024 model year, Porsche’s bringing it back for 2025 with a range of improvements over the outgoing SUV that make it even more compelling than before.

Audi’s all-electric e-tron subbrand continues suffering from battery issues, with the company recently issuing a recall for the GT sedan and its zestier RS variant. The issue is that the high-voltage batteries equipped to the models might short circuit, posing a fire risk to owners and whatever they’ve parked their EV next to. The recall report stipulates that Porsche warned Audi of the possibility of “thermal events” after realizing that some Taycan models were suffering from battery defects.

The Porsche 718 is now dead in Europe after it failed to meet the European Union’s so-called “cybersecurity” regulations. The Cayman and Boxster be joining the gasoline-powered Macan SUV in the afterlife, which encountered its own regional demise for similar reasons. While all models will reportedly return as electric vehicles, we know things will never be the same.

For years, the possibility of a hybridized Porsche 911 has been the topic of much discussion among enthusiasts. Some said the move would spoil the recipe, suggesting the brand create an entirely new model for electrification like it did with the Taycan. Others believed the potential performance gains associated with hybridization were too lofty to ignore, often citing the legendary Porsche 918 as proof. Regardless of which camp you happen to occupy, Porsche is indeed building a hybrid 911 and has even confirmed its official debut for this summer.

While we’re constantly hearing about tightening emissions regulations, the relevant timelines issued by government actors are rarely adhered to. Electric vehicle subsidies went from temporary to indefinite and combustion bans have gone from right around the corner to anyone’s guess. This is also true of the industry itself, which often makes bold promises designed to appease a subset of the public only to repeatedly move the target date back a few years.

As always, I try to pick used cars of the day that you, the B and B, would find interesting. Regardless of quality/price/mileage. But sometimes my biases show. The Acura RSXs that show up here are indicative of that. So, too, is today's pick -- a 2006 Porsche Cayman S.

The point of this feature, since it appears lost on some of you, is to pick out interesting/quirky cars. We don't care if the car is in good quality or not, or if the price is right -- a competing site once had a feature about just that -- or anything like that. We just want to serve up unusual stuff as much as possible.

A manual-transmission 2011 Porsche Cayenne strikes me as unusual. I am not sure I knew this vehicle was ever offered with three pedals.

Today's UCOTD isn't a project like yesterday's ride. It's a nearly 20-year-old 2004 Porsche Boxster S 500 that looks to be in pretty decent shape.
