Volkswagen "Scouts" South Carolina for New EV Factory

International Harvester has been defunct for nearly 40 years, but one of its most iconic products continues to draw significant interest today. The Scout was a line of pickup trucks and SUVs that remain desirable today, thanks to growing interest in vintage off-roaders. Volkswagen purchased the rights to the Scout name and hopes to capitalize on that nostalgia with a line of electric vehicles. VW Rumored to Revive Scout Nameplate

Volkswagen Group is reportedly considering reviving the Scout name for North America. Following the merger of trucking subsidiary Traton and Navistar in 2020, VW found itself in possession of the farm-focused International Harvester. While the brand technically hasn’t existed since 1985, the German company effectively owns its intellectual property — including the Scout name — and is keen to leverage some of its nostalgia for an alleged sub-brand specializing in sport utility vehicles.

A Problematic Pickup: International Harvester Johnnie Reb Edition

Rustic and western-themed special editions have been part of the pickup truck business for generations. Dodge sold Prospector versions of the Ram pickup in the 1980s, and the same company sold “The Dude” “sport trim package” for its “Sweptline” pickups in 1970 and 1971.

The Dude is most famously — or rather, infamously — known because Dodge (or more likely its ad agency) made the peculiar choice of using actor Don Knotts as a celebrity endorser. People loved Knotts, but his best-known role as bumbling sheriff’s deputy Barney Fife hardly projected a “tough” image.

Junkyard Find: 1971 International Harvester 1200D Pickup

I find quite a few International Harvesters in junkyards, mostly because I live in Colorado and the IHC Scout makes sense here. IHC pickups, though, aren’t as easy to find. We’ve seen this ’62 Travelette, this ’72, and this pickup-related ’71 Travelall in this series, and now I’ve found this well-used ’71 pickup in a San Francisco Bay Area yard.

  • Scotes So I’ll bite on a real world example… 2020 BMW M340i. Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. At 40k now and I replaced them at about 20k. Note this is the staggered setup on rwd. They stick like glue when they are new and when they are warm. Usually the second winter when temps drop below 50/60 in the mornings they definitely feel like they are not awake and up to the task and noise really becomes an issue as the wear sets in. As I’ve made it through this rainy season here in LA will ride them out for the summer but thinking to go Continental DWS before the next cold/rainy season. Thoughts? Discuss.

  • Calrson Fan Battery powered 1/2 ton pick-ups are just a bad idea period. I applaud Tesla for trying to reinvent what a pick-up truck is or could be. It would be a great truck IMO with a GM LS V8 under the hood. The Lightening however, is a poor, lazy attempt at building an EV pick-up. Everyone involved with the project at Ford should be embarrassed/ashamed for bringing this thing to market.
  • Jeff I like the looks of this Mustang sure it doesn't look like the original but it is a nice looking car. It sure beats the looks of most of today's vehicles at least it doesn't have a huge grill that resembles a fish.
  • Doc423 SDC's are still a LONG way off, 15-20 years minimum.
