BMW X6 Boldly Goes Where AMC Has Gone Before

BMW has unveiled the production model of their neither-fish-nor-fowl X6 "sports activity coupe" (SAC) at the North American International Auto Show. The high-rider all-wheel-drive hatchback features less passenger space and less cargo room than a normal SUV, at a much higher price. Bimmer's planning a hybrid version, along with diesel variants. Meanwhile, BMW is still touting their SAC as a "first," but the model joins an illustrious group of jacked-up AWD passenger cars like the AMC Eagle, the Eagle SX4 and the Subaru Outback sedan. And we all know how successful those were, don't we? Click here for more TTAC photos of the X6

Although this car is an abomination, I've always wondered why nobody has tried to make a good looking coupe or sedan that is also capable off road. I don't see why off-road capability has to be restricted to a two-box wagonlike bodystyle.

Well, there's always the Schlesser buggy... http://www.schlesser-aventures.org/ or the Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution MPR13... http://www.valeo-motor-sports.com/the_car_description.html Wanna do 220km/h OFF ROAD (and I don't mean gravel roads, I mean sand trails, gatch roads and worse)? Mmmmmm. Tasty. ~R

I think that, by the end of this thread, we'll see that the fervor with which BMW fans defend/ dismiss the recent styling direction from Munich via Ravenna, OH will be second only to that in the Subaru thread. I'd take a Schlesser buggy over any of them...especially a more recent diesel one.

They had a Subaru Outback SEDAN? I had no idea, I thought that was just a Legacy. The jacked up sedans look odd to me, we already have tons of them here in south Georgia. Take a late 80's or early 90's Caprice or Regal, put 22-24" rims on it and jack up the suspension 8" to fit those rims into the stock wheel wells and you have a car with a sill height 14-18" off the ground. They are usually painted in a "stylish" green, yellow, purple or but usually and orange color. They look like horses to me, and these new CUV's look the same minus the killer paint.
