My grandfathers both came to Detroit about 1910, my dad's dad became a chauffeur and became a self-taught mechanic, working for Charles Gauss Tobacconist. Later he worked for Continental Motors as an inspector and retired as a specialist for old Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors. My mother's father worked directly for Edward Gray, Henry Ford's Chief Engineer at Highland Park. He worked for him starting in Oil City at Riverside Engine then past the 'Ford Days' until 1919, returned to Pennsylvania and came back in 1937 as Gray had some projects he wanted to grandpa to work on. The job was for both Gray and Gar Wood, the famous boat racer and builder. My dad was some 40 years with Chrysler, all at the old Dodge Main plant, where my brother joined him. Automotive history, as a result, is in my DNA!
