Tim_Turbo Oh-and a word on reminder lights in rentals.* Some places have some guy in house change the oil, some go to places like Jiffy Lube, some have a mobile oil change company come to their lot and change the oil. If I had a dollar for everytime someone changed the oil in a rental and did not reset the **** light I'd have quite a bit of money.* Just because that light is on does not mean the oil change has not been done.* And just because the light is off, does not mean the oil change has been done.** Now if I also had a dollar for everytime I used to have to explain that, I'd I have even more money!* It was actually one of the things I used to nitpick-bad impression for the customer, and who wants to look at that light the whole time they drive?*

Tim_Turbo I worked in car rental for almost 8 years.* I worked in several offices in different parts of the country in various job titles.* At one point I was a*Fleet and Maintenance Manager.* I saw some fine things, and not so fine things (an Escalade had gone 28K before its first oil change-thats bad!).

Generally speaking smaller, more rural locations usually take better care of their cars than say, big locations like Boston.* I worked my last few years in the business in a smaller office where we were more organized, less busy (except in peak tourist season), and more apt to*maintain the vehicles.*

In general, airport locations cater to tourists and business rentals-yes, some beating of the cars occurs, although not as often as in town locations-not to single any one company out-but Enterprise-they specialize in insurance replacement rentals for when someone wrecks their own car.* Those renters are generally way harder on the vehicles from my experience.* Enterprise actually bought out the company I worked for (National/Alamo) and when we first started fleet sharing/integrating it was amazing just how beat up their cars were compared to ours.* Now they share fleet, but that does not matter.

As far as maintenance goes on a rental-the places change the oil and make sure the recalls are taken care of, and thats about it.* Unless an issue arises that needs to be fixed.* Is that any worse than the average person?* Guess you have to decide that for yourself.*

If it was me, based on my experience, I would buy a former rental car if it was the right one at the right price.*

MBella I would say it's about the same risk as any other used car. People seem to abuse their own cars as much as rentals. I think this is especially true for off-lease cars.

Pch101 If forced to choose, I would vote "nyet."* They've almost certainly been abused, and while they have been maintained by the book, it's the wrong book. (They get serviced on the "normal" schedule, but almost always belong on the "severe" schedule).

They're also often not particularly cheap, although that can vary.* At least in the old days, the domestics were often purchased with buyback programs -- essentially, they were leases disguised as sales -- so the major fleet operators had no reason to deeply discount them, as they were subject to repurchase.

But you may find a gem in the rough, so never say never.* Used cars should obviously be considered on a case-by-case basis, for obvious reasons.

I can't imagine buying a used car without doing some sort of VIN check. It may not tell you everything, but it's better then nothing

In these cases, anything short of irreparable damage will go to the in-house body shop for a patch-up. I once bought a 6-year-old, 100k-mile former rental as a beater for a 110-mile round-trip commute. I got another 80k relatively trouble free miles out of it until it bit the dust with engine failure and electrical gremlins. These days, I have a much shorter commute, work from home 3 days a week, and drive with my kids in the car much more frequently. As a result, I'd be reluctant unless I got a screaming deal.

HoldenSSVSE Given how I treat rental cars in general...and assuming others probably are similar. I'd say no.

I've had rental cars issued to me with warped rotors, squealing brakes, Christmas tree dashboards, change oil indicators, check airbag lights, burned out headlights (not after I left, when trying to drive out).

Rental agencies do "just" enough to meet the minimum requirements - at best.

The counter argument is that there are car owners out there that go, "what I was supposed to change the oil," while with a rental car you at least know the most basic of basic care was likely done.

One other thing - most rental cars are "self insured" so if a renter wraps one around a phone pole it is not likely to show up on a Carfax report.

yesthatsteve Some people hoon rental cars, yes. Some rental agencies aren't necessarily strict on maintenance, like the one that just yesterday sent my wife out for a week's rental in a Grand Caravan with the oil change light illuminated. She'll put close to another 1000 miles on it before they have a chance to take care of it.
