One of my clients posted this to Facebook and it caught my attention. I like the idea, I'm not sure the business model is scale-able though. What do you guys think?

Hooray if it helps people in wheelchairs get around well... but you cannot reasonably compare a low-speed EV that will only be able to be driven on residential streets to a fully long-distance highway speed capable conversion-size lift van (or mini van). Try driving that 25 mph top speed sub-smart car sized vehicle on a 45mph posted road, some SUV driving libertarian would ram you off the road for daring to get in their way, or start shooting.
The brand new lift-vans may command $80k, but they do drop in price like any used vehicle. You can probably find them in great shape for around $20k used, and while the previous owner may have had different modification needs, there are shops that can change them, adapting further or removing adaptations as needed. It looks like a flat-floor golf cart with a ramp. And I'd shudder to think of the crash worthiness of such a vehicle, even if it was completely stationary, considering that many people routinely do up to 35 on residential streets marked 25. |
