After the electric power steering quit without warning while taking a corner with an '09 Ford Escape Hybrid, some research including the NHTSA site revealed that this is a known problem, most common on '08 and '09 Escape Hybrids.* The repair is expensive as it requires replacement of the whole steering column assembly.* Researching the issue revealed that the problem extends not just to other Escapes with electric power steering, but other Ford models that use EPAS or EPS. Some sources: http://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/f...seconds-24649/ http://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/f...roblems-27152/ http://www.carproblemzoo.com/ford/es...d-problems.php http://www.carproblemzoo.com/ford/es...g-problems.php http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0fb471/0 http://www.hybridcars.com/forums/sho...eering-Failure http://community.cartalk.com/discuss...eering-failure http://www.escape-city.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=13723 Given the age of the vehicles most likely to have the problem, they are not under warranty and so Ford is content to make their usual markup on the repair of a safety hazard. While suddenly losing power steering boost is obviously a safety hazard, I'm informed that Ford feels a recall is not justified because not enough of their customers have been injured or killed, and/or the incidence of the problem is not high enough and/or losing power steering isn't that big a problem.* While Ford seems to be aware of this problem, there is no TSB available to the public for it. I urge anyone who has experienced this failure to report it. In the US, this can be done at the www.safercar.gov, and in Canada at Transport Canada: http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/roadsafety/s...s-index-76.htm http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/contact-us.htm#freq Road Safety " Defects and Recalls Phone: 1-800-333-0510 I'm happy to be corrected on any portion of this post that is speculative, and I suggest TTAC do a story on it.
