Video of the Week: Honda CR-V Hybrid Racer

The IndyCar season starts this weekend in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Honda is previewing the hybrid tech we'll see in the series in 2024 with a CR-V-based race vehicle.

This CR-V has a Honda Performance Development hybrid powertrain -- a 2.2-liter twin-turbocharged V6 and an electric motor/generator -- and Firestone racing tires. There's also a racing suspension, and the fuel it uses is claimed to be 100 percent renewable. It will be on display and/or used for on-track demonstrations at various races throughout the season.

There's a short hype video you can check out here, along with the full list of racing bits, such as the suspension that comes from a modified Acura NSX in front and a Dallara IndyCar in the rear.

For those who just want to see the video, click here.

Yes, we too scoff at the idea of a racecar based off of a crossover, but I also have to admit that the CR-V Hybrid racer looks pretty cool with the lowered body.

Go check it out.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

Honda is awesome. But Ford is more awesome.

BMW more better than VW. One more letter.

There are plenty folks that lower the first gen CRVs and feed them all the boost. You can get an AWD manual F24 powered vehicle that when lowered is basically a wagon. Perhaps Honda understands their customers better than internet randos that think the Teluride is the peak of the automobile
