Today we bring a 2000 BMW M5.

The seller has put in a ton of money on upgrades, as well as maintenance, in about two years of ownership.

The complete list is way to long to detail here, but mods include a muffler delete, coilovers, aftermarket headlights, ignition coils, shift knob, and more.

There are some minor cosmetic issues, including a body panel that appears a shade darker than the rest of the paint.

The mileage is 153K and the asking price is $22,500. This BMW is available in Fullerton, California.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

When these came out, I was a BMW fanatic and working at Morgan Stanley. Many of my friends and coworkers had early orders in, and quite a bit of time was spent talking about E39 M5s before they arrived. Once they did start getting delivered, conversations quickly turned to disappointing mechanical failures. Then people stopped talking about cars at work. All E39s were beautiful low-quality junk, even a 5-speed 528i a friend bought to drive while waiting for the M5 to arrive. The M5s were the worst though. I can't imagine trying to keep one going now. Most of what you can't see will have been trying to revert to the earth for over a decade. The Germans were spending far more time thinking about how recyclability would help their bottom lines than they were about long-term owners.

I was still in high school and kept a collection of E39 M5 pictures along with other pictures discretely downloaded from the internet.

There are reasons these are called Big Money Wasters.
  • Jeff How about Aspire for a new subcompact crossover from Ford because it aspires to be bigger and its buyers would aspire for a better vehicle if they could afford it.
  • Jeff Carlos Travares wants to cut costs by 1/3. I don't see Chrysler or Dodge surviving too much longer especially since they are being literally starved for product. The success of the new Charger could extend Dodge a few more years but a failure might be a quick end to Dodge. I could see Stellantis moving more manufacturing for Jeep and Ram to Mexico which I believe will eventually be the only surviving brands of the old Chrysler. As for the Durango if it continues it will not be for too many more years it is an outdated product that I doubt will be redesigned especially when Jeep has a comparable product. Stellantis needs to address the high dealer inventory level by giving better incentives and low interest rates to clear excessive inventory.
  • Johnster I keep thinking that in a year or two Toyota will offer the Camry with the 2.4 Turbo Four Hybrid offered in the Crown to replace the much-loved and much-missed V-6.
  • Quickson I’ll sign up for a first run of a Dodge product right after I get me a nice new disintegrating Neuralink.
  • Tane94 Dodge Lancer, last used circa 1987.
