QOTD: Would You Buy a Chinese Car?

Way back in May, I asked you if Chinese automakers are going to come to the States and eat other OEMs' lunches.

Today, I am going to follow up with our podcast and ask you: Would you buy a Chinese car?

Yes, I am aware that while Chinese automakers aren't selling cars in North America right now, you can buy cars from Western automakers that are built in China. So this is really a two-part question. One part is: Would you buy a car from a Chinese automaker? The other is: Would you buy a car built in China?

I am way more interested in your answers to the first question, but I can't ignore the second.

You know what to do. Sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

  • FreedMike Mine hasn't gone up much. Then again, I'm also 61 (it helps), and I'm not insuring a car that's easy to steal, like a Hyundai or Kia. On the subject of Hyundais and Kias, my kids have one each - my oldest has an Elantra GT and my youngest has a Rio - and you would not not believe how expensive those are to insure, and that's assuming you can even find a company that insures them (many don't). Thanks so much, Kia Boyz. May you rot in jail.
  • The Oracle Crowded segment…..lotsa luck VAG.
  • FreedMike It also has to do with ATPs, which are themselves skewed by the ever-increasing number of full size trucks, full size SUVs and crossovers that are now being insured. It stands to reason that a $60,000 F150 is going to cost more to insure than a $25,000 Civic.
  • JERRY Hell no!
  • Probert One of the most fun cars I have ever owned. Just a wonderful vehicle. Not that fast, but the Yamaha engine screams, and you'll feel fast. Some lucky person will be out Honda Fit scratch and loving life.
