QOTD: Best/Most Famous Roads You've Driven

I was chatting with my ladyfriend last night and the conversation turned to famous roads, and I noted that thanks in part to this job, I've driven quite a few.

I've driven parts of the Vegas Strip, the Blue Ridge Parkway, California highways 101 and 1 (aka the PCH), the Tail of the Dragon, Florida's A1A, Chicago's Michigan Avenue, and parts of Route 66 here in Chicago, and so on. Oh, and I drive Chicago's famed Lake Shore Drive several times a week.

I think many of us have driven famous streets and roads, if not as part of our lives as car enthusiasts, then as tourists on vacation. Or perhaps just as part of our routine lives.

This is different from December's QOTD in which I asked you about your favorite drives. This isn't about the drives you love, but the ones you've done.

Sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

Picked up my X3M40i from the BMW Performance Center in South Carolina last week, and immediately drove it on US178 in SC, NC215, a stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway, NC28 through the Fontana Dam area, and over Tail of the Dragon into TN. All very enjoyable once the slowpokes got out of the way. Also drove the entire Skyline Drive on my way home, but it was raining and pretty foggy, so that wasn't as much fun as it might have been.

Across Australia, from Sydney to Perth, via the Nullarbor Highway. Desolate, very impressed to pass a bicycle tourist somewhere in the middle, I think he'd have a story to tell. Oh, and the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton, NS, in my S4.
