Toyota Teases the Next-Generation Prius

The Toyota Prius may have kickstarted the hybrid revolution, but its star has faded over the years as newer, more efficient hybrids have hit the market with less polarizing style. That’s about to change, though, as Toyota just released teasers for a new model that looks an awful lot like a new Prius. The Prius entered its fourth generation back in 2016, so it was time for an overhaul. Toyota's teaser of the new fifth-generation car appears to show an evolutionary update rather than a radical redesign.

Toyota shared images on its Japanese social media pages, saying only “Hybrid Reborn.” We get glimpses of sharp headlight units and curvy body panels, but visual details on the new car are sparse. The silhouette is sleek, but the car’s signature hatchback shape and stubby hood remain.

Toyota hasn’t shared any other details on the new hybrid, but it’s a safe bet that the updated Prius will be more efficient than its predecessor. Toyota will most likely bring back the popular Prius Prime model as well, as its plug-in hybrid powertrain delivers a strong all-electric range and good hybrid fuel economy.

If you’re excited about the new Prius – and we know you are – there isn’t much longer to wait. Toyota will reveal the next Prius on November 16.

I like the current version but it looked better to me before the taillight shrinking refresh. Don't like the face or butt on the Prime but it's the one I'd pick if shopping Prius.

Dear Marketing, this draw a line preview images are getting old hat. Surely you can do better considering your budget.

It will come standard with automatic tailgate mode so it can ride so close to your rear end so that you cannot see the headlights. Toyoduh drivers (along with sisters Hon and Maz) are all flagrant violators of safe distance driving and are fighting over who own the road. Now Toyoduh drivers will have their cars to automatically place a sheet of paper distance between your rear bumper and their front ones!

This is a weird comment. Most people would say the stereotype is the opposite: that Avalon, Camry or Prius drivers stubbornly do the speed limit in the left lane and clog up the road for everybody who wants to go faster.

I think I'd rather have a Camry hybrid.
