Australian Honda Civic Type R First-Year Allocation Sold Out in Less Than a Day

Things are slowly starting to normalize in the new car market as automakers regain footing after a brutal few years of supply chain disruptions and a pandemic. But while it might be getting easier to buy a new car, desirable new cars are a different story. Some dealers take reservations, some don’t, and most add thousands to the bottom line on cars like the Toyota GR Corolla and Honda Civic Type R as demand far outstrips supply. As it turns out, the situation is the same everywhere, including Australia, where Honda dealers say the Civic Type R’s first-year allocation has sold out in less than 24 hours.

Drive reported that every unit of the more than $72,000 car was spoken for less than a day after the order banks opened on December 1, 2022. White is an in-demand color, and the order list has grown so lengthy that some dealers are quoting two years to get a car. 

The publication notes that Honda sold between 1,200 and 1,300 previous-gen Type Rs in its four-year run, and its sources say the automaker plans 600 cars for the new model’s first year. If the new car is on sale for as long as its predecessor, Honda could end up doubling the earlier model’s production, but we’ll have to wait and see if the production estimates hold. 

Though the Civic Type R is already on sale here, Australians won’t see it until February or March. Unlike here, however, the price car’s price is fixed and non-negotiable, so while Aussies have to wait a bit longer and may have to fight a bit harder to find one, they’ll at least pay MSRP when they get there.
