First Genesis Crossover Lands in One Week

The dawn of a new decade brings a new chapter for the fledgling Genesis brand.

After four years spent slowly growing its lineup to three sedans and crafting a standalone dealer network aimed at instilling some prestige to the brand, Hyundai’s premium division will greet its long-awaited GV80 crossover on January 16th. About time.

The model’s Korean debut date comes by way of the The Korean Car Blog, which posted a pic from what seems to be the launch venue.

While the GV80 Concept unveiled at the 2017 New York International Auto Show gave us a pretty good idea of what to expect from this midsize, three-row vehicle, photos of the production model arrived on the first day of the new year. The model doesn’t stay from the concept in terms of proportions and profile; only cosmetic details change.

Carrying a corporate grille and smartly creased styling seen on the brand’s sedans, the GV80 rides atop a new platform shared with the next-generation G80 sedan. The interior, from what we can see, goes for time-honored tastefulness over outlandish futurism. Expect to find power provided by the marque’s twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6, routed to either the rear wheels or all four.

“Over the last four years, Genesis has established itself as a respected luxury brand with superior vehicle quality and a lineup of class-leading sedans with charismatic and discriminating style,” said global brand head William Lee in a statement. “With the launch of GV80, Genesis will elevate expectations for excellence within the luxury SUV market.”

It seems a long time coming, but development cycles are not overnight affairs. Last decade saw the demise of the sedan as the vehicle of choice for Americans, regardless of whether their tastes lie in the mainstream or premium markets. Not having a crossover kept Genesis’ volume low, and the dealer disorder didn’t help, either.

Expected to go on sale in the U.S. this summer, the GV80 will gain a smaller stablemate in a year’s time in the form of the GV70 — a compact CUV based on the well-received G70 sedan.

After staging a sell-down in the latter half of 2018, Genesis sales rebounded to new heights in 2019. Total volume amounted to 21,233 vehicles, led by the G70. Still small, but destined to grow.

Dash interior area looks like a copy from Lincoln.

H/K were doing horizontal dash layouts before Lincoln.

I wonder if they purposely delayed release until they more stand alone dealers. I've never been to any local H/K dealers but I know someone who was really reluctant to buy a Stinger because of a few dealers he visited. He did buy one in the end.

Delay was for other reasons (and despite the delay, the GV80 is actually still ahead of schedule as initially the plan was to launch the next gen G80 first). Only a handful of stand-alone Genesis dealerships presently; those which are planning on building out a stand-alone store are actually waiting til the lineup fleshes out w/ the crossovers.

  • TCowner Need to have 77-79 Lincoln Town Car sideways thermometer speedo!
  • Kjhkjlhkjhkljh kljhjkhjklhkjh I'd rather they have the old sweep gauges, the hhuuggee left to right speedometer from the 40's and 50's where the needle went from lefty to right like in my 1969 Nova
  • Buickman I like it!
  • JMII Hyundai Santa Cruz, which doesn't do "truck" things as well as the Maverick does. How so? I see this repeated often with no reference to exactly what it does better. As a Santa Cruz owner the only things the Mav does better is price on lower trims and fuel economy with the hybrid. The Mav's bed is a bit bigger but only when the SC has the roll-top bed cover, without this they are the same size. The Mav has an off road package and a towing package the SC lacks but these are just some parts differences. And even with the tow package the Hyundai is rated to tow 1,000lbs more then the Ford. The SC now has XRT trim that beefs up the looks if your into the off-roader vibe. As both vehicles are soft-roaders neither are rock crawling just because of some extra bits Ford tacked on.I'm still loving my SC (at 9k in mileage). I don't see any advantages to the Ford when you are looking at the medium to top end trims of both vehicles. If you want to save money and gas then the Ford becomes the right choice. You will get a cheaper interior but many are fine with this, especially if don't like the all touch controls on the SC. However this has been changed in the '25 models in which buttons and knobs have returned.
  • Analoggrotto I'd feel proper silly staring at an LCD pretending to be real gauges.
