If you’re a diehard Miata enthusiast living in the United States and you had your heart set on buying one of the five hundred 30th Anniversary Edition models allocated to America, well, you’ll just have to wait for the secondary market. Within four hours of the introduction of the special edition, all of those U.S. bound pearl* anniversary units were scooped up with deposits placed by eager buyers.

As is often the case when new versions of vehicles with long heritages are introduced, Mazda invited a number of MX-5 enthusiasts and Miata clubs to the car’s 2019 Chicago Auto Show reveal. According to a Mazda executive with whom I spoke, some of those Miata fans were so eager to get their hands on an anniversary model that they actually placed their orders at dealers via cellphone from the show floor while the press conference was still underway.

*While modern husbands are apparently expected to pony up for another diamond on their 30th wedding anniversary, the traditional gift for that achievement has been pearls. Surprisingly, the Racing Orange finish on the 30th Anniversary Miatas did not appear to have any mica in the paint.

I’d like to get an ND to keep my NC company (can always use a spare Miata), but not sure that orange is my shade. Kudos to Mazda though for keeping the dream alive with a light, RWD roadster that’s really fun to drive.

I thought I did see metallic or pearl in the pics……
Anyway I guess I need to buy one used – can always use a 4th Miata LOL (wife does not agree you need more than “one” Miata turns out…..)

I could be wrong but I worked in a DuPont automotive paint lab for 22 years and to my naked eye on the show stand, it didn’t look like there was any pearl or metallic flake either in the base coat or clear coat. I think it’s just a very bright orange.

One of the cool things about color coat/clear coat systems is that you can put pearl in the clear coat for a different effect than mixing it in with the pigment in the base coat. Depending on the angle of the light it’s almost like the car is two different colors (much more subtle than with Chromallusion or some other color shifting paint).

I reserved a manual trans RF car. Even though I’ve never owned a Miata, this one’s combination of good color, Recaros, Bilsteins, LSD, Brembos, wheels, and limited production was really compelling. I think it’s really handsome in RF trim. It’s like $1k cheaper than a comparably equipped non-anniversary car. I also think it’ll depreciate slower than a non-anniversary car. That the deposit is refundable is that much more attractive.

I hope this convinces Mazda that there is a market for a broader selection of paint colors. Though it probably had more to do with the limited run than anything else.

Incidentally, my Miata could use a new coat of paint, and some flavor of orange is my top choice. I think that color would look better with the light interior I have, moreso than the depressing black Mazda has chosen for this special edition. They do have a nice tan interior that would work, but it’s limited to the grand touring trim and only available with two colors.

When my daughter and her husband ordered their 30th anniversary Miata, they did it 5 minutes after the window opened.

I’m going to keep my NC PRHT. I like having a retractable hardtop, but the ND RF makes a poor convertible. My daughter & her husband have a NC PRHT, and they had a ND RF for a week as a rental. Their ND that they ordered will be a soft top.

Cheeez. Have it. 500 Miatas to US – its a joke. I mean, when they make 500 Ferraris… Miatas… I don’t like Recaros anyways. I actually liked honda sport sears in Si better than Recaros in TypeR.

I guess, I will have to wait Fiat 124 anniversary addition. (just kidding)
