Volkswagen could be on the verge of going Oprah, tossing electric MEB platforms to adoring fans like a pile of Pontiac G6s.

After forging an alliance with Ford — a partnership that might result in MEB-based Blue Oval vehicles — the automaker is reportedly looking at making its EV architecture available to anyone who wants it.

This news comes by way of Reuters, which cites a comment made by VW strategy chief Michael Jost in the German Tagesspiegel newspaper Wednesday.

While VW already has lofty plans for the modular platform, with numerous models and millions of vehicles anticipated in the coming years, Jost said the company wants MEB to become “a standard not only for the VW group.”

The automaker is currently engaged in “advanced” talks with rivals over use of the platform, Reuters reports.

Such an arrangement would benefit automakers who lag behind in EV development due to lack of resources, as well as provide an option for companies unwilling to sink huge development costs into a technology that might not sell in great enough numbers to make the venture worthwhile. Also, no one wants to lose the range war. VW’s MEB-platform vehicles are said to boast driving ranges of up to 340 miles on the WLTP cycle.

While Ford hasn’t said whether it will field an MEB-based vehicle, VW will launch a Ranger-based pickup — once the next-generation version of Ford’s midsizer shows up.

    I’m sure a stipulation of Ford’s use of the MEB platform is that such access is exclusive.

    Jost’s comment was clearly in reference to the Ford alliance.

    From my standpoint, this is wonderful. I hate electric cars but this is great. Y’all don’t understand how much money they BOTH will make. I knew about this merger in 2016, this made sense since 70 percent of Ford fans are vw too Ford already had a hubridyized v8, I smell a war with FCA in speed with this platform underpinning a new probe, and half this tech in the Stang, making it untouchable down low. This tech goes in various applications. Apply your mind.

    I’ll believe it when I see it.

    C’mon. Remember the last VW ‘alliance’ with Suzuki? They also did a partnership, where Suzuki was looking for hybrid tech a few years ago. May I remind you what came from that alliance? Nothing but lawsuits.

    3 years and we didn’t even get a single concept car, a single shared component between them (and mind you, back then, VW owned 20% of Suzuki) why is everyone now thinking VW will sing Kumbaya with Ford?

    Designed by VW and built by Ford. Now, why doesn’t that sound like a good idea when I say it out loud?

      On one hand, that does sound terrible. On the other hand, the Tacoma (among other US-built Japanese vehicles) showed that the problem with American cars isn’t American factory workers. I’d expect this to be no worse than any other VW… for what that’s worth.

      Reminds me of those shirts that went “Heaven is where the cooks are Italian, the lovers French… Hell is where the cooks are British, the mechanics French… and it’s all organized by the Italians.”

      Some time ago, screwing around at work (I’m an import mechanic), I came up with this automotive equivalent:

      “The car from heaven is designed by Toyota, assembled by Audi, with the durability of an old GM truck, handling of a BMW, comfort of a Lexus, interior of an old Jaguar, body of a Porsche, electrics of a Honda, priced by Yugo and warrantied by Hyundai.

      The car from hell is designed by Audi, assembled by Yugo, with the durability of an old Hyundai, handling of a Toyota, comfort of a Honda, interior of an old GM truck, body of a modern Lexus, electrics of an old Jaguar, priced by Porsche and warrantied by BMW.”

    I still keep hearing automakers spewing about their millions of EVs soon on the road!

    When actual demand is what, perhaps 16 or possibly 17 actual vehicles?

    I predict nowhere good is where these car companies are headed. Billions invested into a market that doesn’t actually exist is most certainly a bad strategy.

        Teslas are Teslas. The greenie, blow dry hairdo crowd love ’em and sales are good. For them.

        As for the rest of the manufacturers drooling for a gigantic EV market to recoup the giant investments they are making right now, I agree with Jerome10. Few regular people care. Likely, next thing you know, as VW squawks about low profits, there’ll be legislation REQUIRING EVs to be purchased in the EU, because the automotive lobby runs Germany, and Germany dominates the EU. Then the world can ascend to Battery Heaven, where bureaucrats will find a way to extract highway-use taxes where there are currently NONE on electricity sales for EV charging.

        After this all comes to pass, everyone will sit back and wonder, WTH happened? Why am I not better off? Then, quick-as-a-wink so that people don’t have time to reflect, half-witted autonomous systems will be “the thing”. Pointy-headed “experts” will lecture the masses on lives to be saved.

        And the corporate beat goes on.

        Are they up to half a percent of the market yet?

        Tesla is like Whole Foods except a lot worse: not really a business as such, more like a douchebags’ collective. They overpay for crap which is made just for them. Actually forget a pretty rational business like Whole Foods as a reference, it’s more like the time share market. They’re basically paying fees to keep their own club afloat, a club which has no real viability as a business.

    I am curious, if Ford will get access to the MEB Platform, might VAG get access to Fords new Rear Wheel Drive Biased/AWD CD6 Modular Platform, and supplemented or replace VAGs nose heavy Front Wheel Drive Biased/AWD MLBevo platform on performance vehicles from Audi,Bentley,Lamborghini and Porsche.
