General Motors Finally Recalls Two Pre-bankruptcy Wonders for Airbag Failures

General Motors has issued an airbag recall for the long-gone Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. The recall relates to the passenger presence sensor (PPS), which may become damaged and cause the passenger airbag to not deploy during a crash.

We initially covered this issue in 2015 after noticing that complaints were piling up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and that the PPS design was similar to other models already recalled by GM.

The recall states that the front passenger has an increased risk of injury if the front passenger airbag does not deploy in the event of a crash. The full line of 91,007 Kappa platform vehicles is covered, including the 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky.

GM summarizes the recall by stating, “The Passenger Air Bag Suppression System (PPS) sensor may become bent or damaged within the front passenger seat, possibly disabling the front passenger air bag.” This falls in line with the previous complaints and the similarity in design to the Cadillac CTS sensor (which was recalled in 2010).

The remedy for the recall is still under development and GM has not provided a notification schedule. Likely, the end result will be a replacement of the PPS sensor and seat cushion assembly, as there is no way to repair it once it breaks. We look forward to hearing more updates as the recall schedule is released.

I guess it is time to do my new ignition and key at the same time as this? Pffft! I love the lightweight turning action and only have a house key and remote for extra weight. I don't think they touch the PSP grids nestled in the race buckets anyways.

Watch out with the ignition key. They take the originals and give you crappy ones without a Pontiac logo. Tell them you want the original keys back after they make the swap so you can keep them with the car.

But if the airbag went off it would probably fill your face with shrapnel, so the dead sensor is a good thing. Besides, the switch will kill power to the car in an accident, so the bags wouldn't go off anyway.

+1. I have NEVER been fond of the loaded shotgun pointed at my face.
