And now a treat for the weekend. An original documentary about the Players 200 race at Mosport in 1962. Jo Bonnier, Masten Gregory and other racing legends all appear. Who doesn’t long for the days when men were men and cigarette companies were the largest sponsor of motor racing events?

That was fun to watch. Do you know what model Ferrari that is at 1:23? With the MKZ rear styling?
Looks like a 250TR to me. Not all of them had the pontoon fenders that they are known for.
Thanks otter. I couldn’t tell what it was. Sort of like a flattened breadbox.
I think the ‘flattened breadbox’ you’re seeing is actually two surfaces – the (sloping) rear deck in the background and the ducktail rear spoiler in the foreground. I had to look at it twice to see this.
That makes sense now. I’ve looked at more Ferraris online this afternoon than in my entire life trying to find it. Thanks again.
Fantastic film! Thanks for finding it.
Yes, I do long for the days “when men were men”, as, e.g. Olivier Gendebien (“When World War II erupted and the Nazis occupied Belgium, he joined the Belgian resistance movement. Fluent in the English language, he served as the liaison with the British agents being parachuted into Belgium. Later in the War he went to England, serving with the British army as part of a Belgian paratrooper unit.”). He might have been smoking tobacco, as well, just imagine!
Derek – Thanks so much for finding this classic. I loved the racing in the early 60s. I think that’s what got me hooked on cars. The cars weren’t that fast so you could actually see what was going on. There was lots of passing unlike today. There were no turbos so you could hear the roar. I remember the smell of 105 octane and tetra-ethyl lead. Can you believe the polo helmets the drivers wore? Pit crews in short sleeves? Safety wasn’t such a concern and I remember a driver burning alive. I can still hear his screams.
And bias-ply tires too! I wish I was alive to witness it.
Not to mention, no guard rails, roll bars the diameter of hula hoops, and open face helmets. It was a different time, a fun time, but it was a much more dangerous time despite the lower speeds. Thanks for the vid Derek. Mosport…..I mean Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, is a great place to watch ANY kind of racing.
Some very good video featuring Masten Gregory, the Kansas City Flash. Dan Guerney and Roger Penske as well, but Gregory was the feature player.
That was fantastic. Thanks for the film.
Motor racing was so much more exciting when there was a chance of mechanical failure and the drivers were out there on their own.
Great stuff!
My late father was a huge racing fan, and went to Mosport a few times in the 50s and early 60s. Watching this, it’s easy to understand the attraction.
Thanks for posting it!
